Am I Crazy or Could This Possibly Work? - Goodbye Water Changes

Can you ask him why?
Because he has f1 discus, he maintains them at a tds of 60 and PH of 5.5-6.0.

If referring to the shells it breaks down at a faster rate in acidic water, which releases more buffers then when neutral stops releasing as quickly, rinse and repeat.

Sorry, just thought I would make the information more accessible. The link is still there if you want more detail.

How is a link to a thread on the same forum, not accessible? How more accessible does information need to be? WTF are you talking about?

Makes sense. It would be hard to get a good buffer for 5.5-6.0. Shells get you to 7.0-7.5, and coral from 8.0-9.0 (my numbers may be a little off). He must really watch that tank closely.

You have to read the whole thread. That one was pretty decent, but many have a lot of useless posts to drag through (like our current conversation).

He's been teaching chemistry for years, PhD actually. So he's found a way lol

I see, I didn't realize that you were condensing information for the members here. There's a scary thought ......

Beauty in simplicity.

Angelphish Angelphish is it really worth spending 2300 dollars to perhaps not automate your system, or have a chance to? Who's funding this?

I should try this, all I have to do is not spend any of my pocket money for the next 15 years.
If you have an alternative then please list it.

Algae scrubbers and elbow grease. Pythons work...
Not when the tank is in the basement, the nearest sink is upstairs, and the python doesn't have enough suction to pull the water upstairs.
