Jack Dempsey got me confused

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It’s in bad shape, also probably part of the reason it’s so skiddish, with some good food and clean water you’ll get a much better looking fish. It will be easier to sex then too. In some pictures it looks male, but I actually think it’s a muted female that’s stressed. The bearding looks like it touches the mouth and under the chin. I think you just can’t see it as well on the other side because it’s colors are so muted.

See what the others say.
Read my post below but this what I grabbed for livebearers

The live bearers I got
Idk about bad shape, looks completely stress washed out but otherwise healthy for the moment. Kill the lights and let her? settle in. Agree with Covetous Covetous on the sexing. Hard to be sure when that washed out.

The other really weird thing tho is my jd attacked the first platy that hit the water but then spit it up. It’s laying right in front of her and she doesn’t want to eat it... even weirder tho is if I drop pellets in she eats them as fast as they hit the ground...

I still have the same experience with my JD. If I make any changes to the tank at all he may go off food and hide for a period of time. What type of cover/decor do you have in the tank? It may seem counterintuitive, but often the more hiding spots a fish has the more often it will be out in the open.

This is the tank after u guys said to add more stuff

Good job, the floating plants and live bearers + good clean water and in no time you’ll have a colorful and healthy Jack Dempsey.

Already looks better yes. Good job!:) If she eats the platy don’t worry about it. Try Swords or Mollies next time. How many convicts? She is definitely looking female to me now. Like the deco, fake but looks clean. Keep up the maintenance and enjoy your tank.

There is 3 convicts, and like I said 2 seem to be male and female and hide in one of the clay caves. While the third never leaves the jds side.. it’s the weirdest thing. The jd doesn’t seem to mind the on convict, but always backs the other two convicts away if they come near. But never attempts to bite or eat them, she just kind of uses her size to scare them and then returns to the cave to hang with the third convict.. it’s the weirdest thing.. maybe she things the third convict is offspring?
