Jack Dempsey bloated belly

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I gave him a salt bath for 30 minutes which he was fine with. Back in quarantine tank did a 40% w.c. and treated with erythromycin we will see if this helps. I also noticed he has what looks like white slim sticking to him. Also his scales are sticking out now

Well that is not good. I was hoping the swelling would not end up being dropsy. I dont think erythromycin will help with the cause of dropsy. Triple sulfa was not available? or Furan-2?

Let's see how the fish will do overnight.

I will get a picture soon. He seems to be breathing a little better and a little more lively today.

Well that is good that a gram positive antibiotic like erythromycin seems to be working. I would still look into getting a gram negative antibiotic.

Do you remember if Triple Sulfa or Furan-2 was available from your LFS? If not, a Walmart that carries fish may have Jungle Fungus Clear, which is the same as Furan-2.

You can do a large water change (50%-75%) prior to adding Furan-2. Be sure to test the water for ammonia and nitrite everyday with a liquid test while medicating. Don't forget to add the dissolved epsom salt back in.

Should I wait and see if the Erythromycin helps more or just do a water change and give him the furan2

Could be a bowel obstruction caused by feeding too many dry pellets in rapid succession. If that's what he was fed...

So I was able to get triple sulfa. I did a 40% w.c. put that in with epsom salt again in the 20gal. Did another salt bath for 30mins we will see if this helps. Also a pic of him in salt bath . Could this be dropsy

Yes it looks like dropsy which is a symptom of a bacterial infection. You dont have to do epsom salt bath anymore. Just treat in 20g with Triple Sulfa per directions. You can keep the 2 teaspoon of epsom salt in the 20 g.
