Critique my intake plumbing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
These are drain lines, so the pressure is effectively zero, or whatever atmospheric pressure it....pretty much not a factor. So a gate valve can take it, no problem. Everybody runs gate valves.

Also, keep in mind, you don't need to run the same size gate valve as the size of the drain line. They make PVC reducing bushings, so you could reduce your 2 inch line to 1.5 inch, or 1 inch gate valve.

You might also consider running both drain lines into 1 gate valve. That's how mine is.

Well then I will definetly order a gate valve for the main drain and keep a ball valve on the emergency since it will be pretty much open all the time. Thank you for the advice.

I'd suggest you might want to connect that elbow to the bulkhead somehow, otherwise you're going to get splashing everywhere...:P

Too white. Paint it or something. Add unnecessary loops just for aesthetics. Other than that it seems like it’s doing it’s job. I like it but it’s more functional than sexy. Tiger stripes look cool.

I think it looks clean. I would try to incorporate unions in case you need to re-run and/or replace parts of the plumbing in the future. If not gate valve, do you have access to true union ball valves? Agree ball valve is fine for the trickle drain and really used for maintenance. I've been running for three years and never had a need to close...knock on wood.

I would suggest you add a strainer to the full siphon drain. I noticed it slightly restricts flow, but I liked the fact nothing large is going to clog it.

It’s kind of hard to see in the first picture I posted because of the black background but the main siphon has a strainer installed. But I will be adding unions and gate valve for sure.

Ah, I missed that LOL. I was doing my "Santa" thing and overlooked.

BTW, our sumps look similar at least what I can see at the end. Will you do filter socks?

I see no need for a gate valve if you switch your pump to a DCP pump. They have such fine adjustability that you can turn them up or down slightly to make the siphon work correctly. I do it with my herbie setup all the time with evaporation between water changes.

That is a totally great idea.
