mentioned the bottom of a lot of commercial made tank can be a no drill situation since they temper the glass. Usually done to keep cost down because they can go with a thinner glass if tempered.
Since I used a custom tank manufacturer I ordered my tank with 3/4" plate glass on the bottom and then did 5/8" all the way around with low iron on the front and sides. At times I kind of wish I did a sump instead of canisters but I can live with it for now. I could always add an external box and set it up in the future. But I say do it now in the planning/set up process.
