Just trying to get an idea of how many people rather bag their own fish when going to a LFS. The one I go to, the kid who bags my fish must have never worked a day in his life due to his terrible Water:Air ratio and the fact the bag has a huge knot in it. It was actually frustrating to me especially when acclimating new fish. If he goes to help me again I seriously want to ask if I can bag my own fish because he clearly has no clue. Poor kid doesn't know anything about fish either.. told me a Pacu and a Silver Dollar were the same thing... It's like, give me a break.. why do places hire these people? I'm gonna ask if I can put that Red Tail Catfish in my 29G guppy tank and if it can fit for life next time.. anyone else feel this way? Please share personal experiences with the less educated lol

if its a chain pet store..most employees are part timers and lack the knowledge or passion to properly educate customers on fish stock...whenever i'm browsing around and just happen to listen in on some of the advice they give to customers makes me just say wtf...i find that owners of smaller lfs are much better aware of what they stock and sell...

My local place let's me bag my own fish, they know I managed multiple fish stores over the years.

My lfs doesn't let me bag my own fish
but to work there you have to own at least 2 tanks that are both 55 or larger
And you have to have been in the fish keeping hobby for at least 3 years...
And then they train them for 1 year before they become "Trustworthy" as the boss says :)

Chain stores are the worst. I had a girl trying to catch an oscar that already had severe hith in a 10gal tank with a bunch of others. She chased the poor thing forever and finally got it in the net. While walking it to the bag she drops him! And then just stands there for a moment before picking it up. Bags it and says if it dies I can get my money back O.O I was so stunned I didn’t know what to do. Poor thing didn’t even make it long.

I grabbed six Australian Rainbows from our local Petland a few years ago and the girl that caught them was way too aggressive with the net. She managed to pinch one between the net and glass, smooshed one into the gravel, and was thrusting the net around the tank way too fast. Ended up losing the pinched one. Turns out the girl was the head of the fish department. I felt like I needed to teach her the two net method.

I have been fortunate to catch and bag my own fish at one of the lfs I frequently go to.
Me too,I used to work there years ago and some of the old staff is still around so they'll let me grab and bag what I want.I have even bagged up fish for customers who were present at some times

It's just dumbfounding to me that you work at a pet store and you provide people with incorrect information. I worked pet retail for 5 years, if I truly didnt know something I would tell the customer that I wasnt sure and I would research it when I got home.
