Dropping BD prices

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep. Pure BD has peaked and dropped all over the world now. BD on its own can only look so good. It's the hybrids that have bigger, brighter, and whiter spots that are now getting the attention. However, the highest grade, best pure BD still command top dollar. The pups your seeing for $500-600 ea are not high grade. They may look "ok" now but grow it out and see how small the spots are. All the cheap imports may look better than average due to what is commonly seen being bred here in the US. But the guys still breeding the best stuff here are holding onto their stock for good reason. They wont let go of the nice stuff cheap.
Agree but open up the older threads of BD rays and compare them to now. Those true BDs fetched high price and look the same if not worse then what’s called a low grade bd now.

This goes back to the same exact thing we've argued about in the past.....

Quality is in the ****ter. A nice pure BD still commands roughly the same price it always has, while the average or less then average have gotten cheaper, some much cheaper.

I wouldn't even call 75% of whats being peddled today as BDs actual BDs. I think over the years we got used to calling anything black and white BD, now the terminology has thrown a wrench into things......

Prices are down across the board (even albinos are almost reasonable) - this is for a few reasons. First the quality of what is called a bd is way down ... Fish being sold as “BD” do not come close to what the standard should be. 2nd the glut of rays coming in from Asia that may or may not be BD being sold as BD are cheaper then domestically bred pure animals which in turn makes people bring there prices down. Lastly more and more people are breeding there own which creates additional supply and no over head so those can be sold cheaper. It is all cyclical (anyone remember a few years ago when you couldn’t get a pearl ray?) and with the cities inclusion it may be harder to import rays soon . Now I took advantage of the market and picked up a nice 12 inch female for less then I’ve paid for pups before this week...so enjoy the price reset lol

I get it. You believe quality is in the sh***er I believe quality has far surpassed what we used to deem amazing hence the low price on what used to be considered amazing. You can say that they are low quality rays or simply that standards have been raised. It’s not hard to pick up black diamonds like the ones in this thread for $500. I see it everyday and am offered them weekly. That thread described those rays as “the best I have ever seen”, “top quality”, “unbelievable”, now how would they be described? Average looking?

And those were wild caught rays.

I think the one big thing to factor in is that there are way more BD's available now days...of all levels of quality. There are a whole lot of people who spent the big bucks years ago who are now having a lot of success breeding. The result is the market is flooded with BD's whether it's hybrids, pure, or whatever. Never thought I'd see the day when a quality marble would fetch more than an average BD...but here we are. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 10 years. $500 boesemanis? Lol

OK.... MAybe we do actually agree on something? QUALITY isn't in the ****ter. Standards are. People call a Leo mixed with a Motoro "BD sp" now. What "we" call "quality BDs" nowadays are mutts. The crazy nice "Super WHite" BDs are mutts. So IF you were to compare the WC BDs in that thread to real PURE BDs these days then todays may be a bit nicer, why? Cause don't CBs typically result in nicer pups then the parents? Cause you're breeding 2 quality specimens whereas in the wild breeding happens regardless, chances of 2 NICE rays breeding is probably not as common.

If you're passing up eclipses like in that thread for $500 maybe you shouldn't be...... lol.

You know what has really changed? Everything. Thanks to the internet. Now all it takes is something like Qtaro for everyone to readjust what they deem "nice". Internet has given us the power to see pics of all the rays that are results of several generations of selective captive breeding...... Of course this yields crazy rays. BUT are they pure? Maybe from a hobbyist that is a purist. But do you think the ray puppy farms after the almighty dollar are breeding pure? lol.

Next 10 years will be super. People will realize how much the almighty dollar screwed the ray world......

Views on this kind of stuff probably vary greatly depending on when a person got into rays. Might be awesome if you're just getting in, might be flat out sickening if you've been a fly on the wall since before the ban........
