Tank upgrade - need help with sump setup.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
duanes duanes I would never have thought of that. That is a great idea and something I’ll be keeping in mind. I will also be looking at the Union connectors. Servicing the lines wasn’t something I was thinking about either.

SOLObucky SOLObucky and Nate77 Nate77 Thank you for the pictures of your sumps. It’s great to see how many different ways a sump can be setup. It’s giving me lots of ideas and options.

All these pictures and information is so helpful!

Well, I hope it isn’t overkill. But I picked up a nice used 55gal tank today to use as the sump. All the store had was 55’s and bigger, or 29gal and smaller. So nothing around the 40 range. But for $11.40 I can’t complain.
I brought home a new addition for the tank once it’s up and running. So right now the 55 is going to be a quarantine tank till I get everything sorted for the 135. I’m hoping my husbands uncle will be able to come down and put a new outlet in behind the tank.
And my thought/reason for getting a bigger tank for the sump was so I have a timeout space if it’s needed. Ill just keep part of it sectioned off for that purpose.

Please excuse the plastic taped to the top. I wanted to minimize evaporation and I didn’t have any glass tops that would fit.
So this is my new additions temporary home.

55 gal will be a great sump.

Where is the tank located ? Is it in an area where you would want it to be as silent as possible say in a family room or something ?

You can go to he or Lowe's and pick up poly carb sheets as a lid for the 55 gal very easy to cut and won't warp.

It’s in a sunroom. So noise shouldn’t be an issue. The room is already humming with the sound of air pumps and running water from a hob filter that’s unusually loud. I don’t mind it.

I’ll have to go check out those poly carb sheets. Could I use that to section off parts of the sump? If not, where’s the best place to buy something to use as dividers?
I wasn’t going to put dividers in, but I saw somewhere that said they act as a bubble trap? I’d like to avoid having excessive micro bubbles in the main tank if I can.

Bubble traps aren't a concern in freshwater.

No they aren't sturdy enough to be used as a baffles.

You might wanna google or you tube some sump set ups that aren't silent some can be loud....like flushing a toilet bowl loud. Reason why I mention it it because there are plumbing methods that reduce noise

Ok, I’ll check out some videos. So far I’ve only been looking at pictures of sumps.

I’ve been doing some digging around and drawing up my idea for the sump/plumbing. I came across his video where a guy uses zip ties to quiet the overflow by having the ends hang down as shown in this screen grab I took.

Is this the main area that noise comes from? I did listen to a few videos and the gurgling sound is pretty loud. Any other areas I should be focusing on for noise reduction?

The most noise comes from that area (over flow box) but can also come from the plumbing that enteres the sump. That's an easy fix we just submerged the pipes and it quites them.

With all the glare I can't see your overflow does it have one ?

Yes it has small boxes in front of the overflow pipes. Maybe 6”? Not the full length kind I see on most tanks.

Ugh, I can’t get a picture without glare. The biggest downside to having my tanks in the sunroom:/

Unlike the picture in that video, the pipe for mine is in the back. So I’m not sure how the sound will be going through it. I really wish the guy I bought the tank from would have been home for me to talk to. I really wanted a rundown on how he had it set up.
