New born rays, what to feed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'll say first I don't have too much experience with pups except the ones I bought and transfered to my tank in about a day of their birth, that said I will try to share my experience.

So my pups when I got them were from huge mothers, so they are about the size of my palm++ (5 inches or so?) (They are born bigger than my motoro lol which was like months old at least)
Don't think the water is ever too much a problem where I live, no problems transferring them. (BD pup pair)

Now on to the feeding part, I noticed that you were only offering blood worms and ghost shrimps to them. I never had any ghost shrimps but I did try frozen blood worms and not get any results with them, my pups just ignore them. Even my actively feeding Motoro don't have interest in them.

Also note that not all sting rays like earthworms, I have a bin of nightcrawlers that I tried with no effect what so ever.

The only thing I have during that time that my Motoro is actively feeding on is market prawn. So I stuck with market prawn once per day, slightly more than my Motoro can eat. And my guess is monkey see monkey do, they started nibbling on the MP but refused to swallow and took a few more days before starting to eat.

I have no idea on cause of death.

Perhaps next time before the birth, like one month or so, get a bigger basket or use the one that you have is fine. And get a "tea cup stingray" (any kind that is small, my motoro is a impulse buy before even knowing about the BD pups) and keep it in the basket that you will keep the pups in.
Keep the feeding once per day to reduce growth rate but ensure that it is actively eating MP or something (mine hates pellets, nor do I think we should be feeding hard pellets to the pups).
Then when the pups are born, move them to the same basket and keep the feeding constant (no change) until the pups are interested in the food)

Ummm, thats all I can think of right now, I'll add more when I think of more.

Btw my pups are born around 28 April, bought about 29 April and started eating about 3 and 4 may. Stable eating about a few days after.

Thx for sharing...

a friend told me i should have moved them immediately to their new tank (6hours or so after born), get a heater and set it to 30C.

In my case i left the pups in the floating crate for 1 week. I dont know if it could make any differences or not.

My tank temperature is stable at 27-28C. I dont know if i really need a heater as i live in tropical country.

No problems, but please do take my advice with a huge grain of salt, I've only been keeping rays for about 6 months and not at your level with expecting rays, just some experience with pups that's all.

From the person I bought it from, he have them at a rented pond about 20km away so he can only check on them like once per day or something. But he said in his experience he have never lost a ray before from moving from his pond to his tank at home.

And since they are born in the water I don't think there will be any problems. (Might be wrong, no experience)

My tank temp is stable at 31 degree because of bad tank design and being on the equator but so far I have no problems at all. 27 28degrees should be fine, I'm in the process of setting up a water chiller for the tank to get to about 28 29 degrees

Sorry you lost the pups. Not sure what happened to them. Was this the first litter from this particular female?
Sometimes pups just don’t make it. I’ve had it happen before.

Yea it was her fist litter and actually my first litter ever.. so my lack of experience of takin care of new born made things worse.

I know how to take care of pups that are already eating, but new born is different i guess

Damn giar giar sorry for your lost... I just lost half my stock due to unknown reason and it sucks

I think you are doing a good job with your pups. Some keepers move pups, others don’t. I always move mine just because it’s easier for me to feed/maintain them in a separate tank.
I bet the next litter will go better for you.
