Need help with diagnosis and recomendations

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just a thought. Don't rule out fungal infection yet either. Maybe try using a broad spectrum fungal med and broad spectrum bacterial. If you can find something that can be used together safely that could be good too. Otherwise treat separate and leave a bit of time in between treatments.

I would up the frequency of your water changes to daily. Fin level.

In the at tank how often are you changing water?

I'm guessing, but I don't think it's parasites and I'm leaning towards bacterial.

Have a read here and do more research online and see if that helps pickout a medication to try. Maybe reduce temps a few degrees more down to around 75 should be good.

I will do large water changes after a full round of medication, so around every 5 days

I would treat with Seachem Kanaplex (gram negative) and Methylene Blue. Methylene blue will stain silicone. If you can't get those locally, see if you can get Seachem Paraguard locally, which also stains silicone but not as bad as MB. If you don't see improvement with Paraguard after 1 week, then go to the Kanaplex and MB treatment for 1 week. Paraguard treatment is not the same as the Kanaplex and MB treatment.

I can get all of those medications, are kanaplex and methylene blue safe to treat together? I have not used either before

Yes they are safe to use together. MB will stain everything. Also, if you do a water change, water conditioners will destroy the effectiveness of MB. Be sure not to add the MB less than 1 hour after using a water conditioner. The same thing happens with Paraguard if you decide to go that route.

Dose Kanaplex for full treatment 3 doses. MB only has to be dosed once, unless you do a water change during the week, then you will have to redose for the whole tank (water conditioner will destroy MB), unless you have a water container standing by and prepare the QT water ahead of time.

I cant do daily water changes with some of the medications i have been using, or it will not allow for a full medication, but when is not on meds he will get every other day water changes

The key to doing daily water changes or water changes in the middle of a medication period is to prep the water ahead of time in a different container, like the day before, and then dosing the tank with the appropriate amount of medication for the new water on the day of the water change.

I will give the kanaplex and MB a try, thanks for the advice.

The species of pike you have comes from the soft, low pH water of the Amazon basin, it is highly tannin infused which is antibacterial, and where nitrate barely ever exceeds 10ppm.
I believe the bacterial infection is chronic from the above normal water parameters and conditions you cited.
I believe you need to get tannins into your water change water, and do enough frequent water changes to reduce nitrate to at most 10ppm.
You could soak leaves, old tea bags, and such in rain water enough to turn the water brown, and add that softer low pH rain water to your tap water for changes.

Agreed, tannins are very beneficial to fish, some fish don't last long without tannins, and tannins can be antibacterial as well
