Some Monster Wolf Fish caught on a trip to Brazil

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gar jump and thrash around, but none of the ones I have seen spin fast in a circle like the wolf fish. I have never seen any other fish do that.
Only seen a few other fish will do the quick tight circle.
White bass is the only one that comes to mind right now and they don't get near as big

Like a gator roll!
Really cool pics man. Thanks for sharing! Wouldn't want to swim there, that's for sure!
I read another thread that said you used a hunk of wolf fish to catch a black piranha... did you ever eat the wolf fish? I assume they might be kind of gamey, but, always curious, if you know what I mean...

I have never tried them. Their appeal as catfish bait seems to be that they are tough and strong smelling, which doesn't suggest they would be great to eat. However, the local people certainly eat them.

I have eaten many of the fish down there while camping out (peacock bass, piranha, arowana, pacu, etc) and all of them were good. Piranha do have a lot of small bones that are annoying. My choice for eating personally is a 3lb or so peacock bass.

Just be careful what you accept, many people will offer you protected fish species to eat

It wasn't always simple; sometimes we were just served what the locals prepared and never found out what it was. When you are in the middle of the jungle with indigenous folks who have had limited interactions with the outside world (a couple of my guides had never seen an automobile for instance), it's best not to offend them by questioning what they offer.

That said, if I caught a small peacock that was foul hooked or something I would often try to bring that back to get prepared. Pretty sure most of what I ate was peacock.
