Hey guys, so recently I've been looking at the backs of my fish food just like I do with the food I eat. I noticed that Hikari uses a lot of ingredients that I wouldn't ingest my self and definitely wouldn't want my fish to. Is anyone using a natural pellet/flake/stick food to feed their fish? Looking for fish food with more natural ingredients.

Why not make your own food? Blend together any of the following depending on species you have, then add to a gelatin mixture.

Crickets
Mayflies
Shrimp/krill
Cooked peas
Zuchinni
Nori (unseasoned)
Trout/tilapia/salmon
Crayfish (good source of calcium)
Edible coconut activated charcoal (as a chelate, can also increase reproductive success ).
Fresh (not preserved) salmon or trout skeins.

Non blended items to add to gelatin:
Cut silversides
Mackerel pieces
Spirulina powder
Cricket powder

I already currently make my own frozen fish food but I was wanting to find an all natural pellet. Plus, I wouldn't of posted this question if I had the thought to make my own fish food.

I don't know of any "all natural " pellets on the market, but I'll keep my eyes and ears open for now

This is always going to be a hot topic. Regardless of the ingredient list many folks swear by Hikari. I myself use them because I have just not been able to get my fish onto NLS. Many folks here those swear by NLS as the food of choice.

Same as above, I tried to get Toni to switch to NLS. She was having no part of that. So back to Hikari Carnisticks she went.
I would not call Hikari a bad food, it turned this20170608_092714.jpg

As many others have stated NLS is the closest thing you're going to get. I've personally never had a fish not eat it. Hikari will be readily eaten by fish and your fish will grow eating it but objectively speaking, as you've already noticed, some of the ingredients in Hikari are not good. That's not saying your fish won't grow on it, or that you're a bad fish keeper for not feeding NLS, but NLS is just objectively better nutrition ingredient-wise. I don't know why people take this subject so personally.

For most hobbyist as long as the fish are getting proper nutrition it doesnt matter, however for someone trying to raise say, world class pellet fed bass , they need to be more picky.
Personally to many people feed pellets only, when pellets should be part of a BALACED diet, instead of the entire diet

While I don't disagree that a balanced diet is beneficial, I would argue that a good enough pellet IS a balanced diet.
