Clearly you are an expert in fish identification. Can you show me any reports of the common spotted bass found on Maine.
I’m leaning towards smb.
Nah smallmouth tend to have shorter more robust, almost squarish body, a more robust look and look shorter for their weight, plus a smallmouths mouth is shorter when closed

Almost never found in maine, but bucket introductions are very common across the country, that's how many fish have spread, this fish also has been introduced to the western United States and parts of south africa

So spotted bass are common, but almost never found in Maine? Alligators survive winter in Maine? Where do you get your information from?

To the OP, could your friend take some more photos of this fish and post here?

This is a thread that needs to have some update with the fish as it grows and is easier to identify.

First and foremost I don't think it is "sad" by any means. At this juvenile stage bass look very similar,.It is shortly down the road when they grow that they are easier to distinguish. Also of smallmouth, largemouth, and spotted (the three that are in question) spotted is by far the least common of the three.

Lastly, as it was stated earlier, this was in Maine. So my vote still goes to the LMB. Yes spotted in maine is not impossible but it is also very very uncommon.

Instead of calling people sad, how about you simple post what you think the fish to be and then we can see later on what it turns out to be. That would be the mature route to go...

I cant speak for their abundance in maine but its clearly a spotted bass. I already outlined some of the most telling and obvious features but this is really an apple pie vs. Orange juice scenario.

Only one gator, far as I know (this inspired the movie placid lake).

The point being that because of the complex nature of this world, sometimes animals survive or are introduced beyond where we would expect them, the alligator in question was a small one that managed to survive at least one winter by taking refuge in a heated pipe system during winter, there are also many reports of capuchin monkeys in New York, in the snake river they've found tilapia, which survive by hanging around thermal pools in the cold months, and here in a.z we have lovebirds
