I know I’ve always been drawn to the alligator gars, but have always stayed away from them because I know how large they get, I’m just wondering, is there anyway I could realistically house an alligator gar for their lifetime?

They can survive colder than that in the wild. Where I live in Texas it gets colder than 50F in the winter and they are native.

I was referring to air temp, it gets below freezing air temp wise.

Ive never gone out and measured the water temp specifically, but ice forming close to the bank makes me think that the water temp does drop below 50 degress F here in central Texas.

Alligator gar are found as far north as Illinois, I would assume that if they can survive the winter that far north you would be looking at water temps in the high 30's F if not closer to freezing (32 F).

It is possible, although aquariums might not be the best option. I know of some people who have successfully kept and bred alligator gars in aquariums, but I think they'll do much better in a pond.
