  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh I'm sorry, you said sun fish, not sun catfish. I read it wrong, oops. My bad. I don't have any experience with sunfish, sorry.

it's ok, they'd be hard to get anyways, so far here's the list I would go for
1. bichir
2. apistogramma and other small cichlids
3. julidochromis and tropheus cichlids
4. buffalo head cichlid
5. exodon
(non predators but something i'm interested in)
6. a guppy tank (I don't know how many I can keep in there, I'd like to have about 30 or so though)
7. a shrimp tank (I have had terrible luck with shrimp though)

so it's a 29 gallon then?
I would say that's too small for the bichir, also too small for the tropheus. The other options are plausible, but not all together of course. Some julidochromis should be do-able. Or buffalo head cichlid. Apistogramma pair or trio would work. I guess just decide what you like better of those. Personally id say apistos would be best for the tank.

I'm looking at a duboisi cichlid too, I don't think tropheus will be too big

duboisi are tropheus, long term a 29 gallon (or 38) won't work out well. Tropheus are one of the most active and aggressive African groups IME. 55 gallon is considered absolute minimum for a colony among tropheus keepers.
There are plenty of africans which would be much better in a 29- Look at altolamprologus compressiceps "Sumbu Dwarf" for example

ok, so would I be able to get an aztec carpintis cichlid? I want some julido cichlids, and one large lake tanganyika cichlid as a center piece. So far I might do 2 julidochromis dickfeldi, 2 marlieri cichlids, 2 masked julies, and 2 reganis, would this be a bad idea? I hear julidochromis cichlids are very peaceful from what I've heard (well the dickfeldi I have in my 10 gallon is very peaceful)

Why not just 2-7 (depending on size) of your favorite Julie/more social Neolamprologus? 1 species is usually easier to deal with than a mix, and you'll get a more natural social interaction between them, and no inbreeding issues. You could keep mollies or maybe guppies with them too, as a nice, no-issues way to add diversity and extra colors.

so no mixing of the julies (marlieri, dickfeldi, regani, etc,), no addition of the Neolamprologus, and none of the aztec carpintis cichlid?

"Aztec carpintis cichlid" im assuming you mean hericthys carpintis- they get to about 12" long, beefy, and highly aggressive. Definitely a bad idea for this tank.
This is a very small tank, I think you will have much better luck if you tone back your stocking ideas quite a bit. I don't want to seem like a negative guy or rain on your parade or anything. But if you try any of these ideas you have- large predators, large cichlids, mixing many cichlids- none of that is going to work beyond the very short term in a 29 gallon tank.
I agree that one juli species would be much better, get a group of one species rather than a couple of each, that way the aggression in the group is distributed evenly and you can watch the group behavior. You could also add some shell dwellers with the juli's such as N. Brevis.
