Surface dweller that gets 4" to 6"?

I found some upside down catfish(synodontis nigriventris) at my lfs. Would they work?

I've kept those and actually want to have them again.

I thought you wanted surface dwellers?

Those fish like to hide in caves or under leaves or driftwood, at least in my experience. I've read that in groups they come out more but I don't think they spend much time at the surface except to feed. They also will turn themselves right side up to eat as well.

My port hoplo catfish practically lives at the top, he even eats the food meant for the silver dollars. Perhaps you could find another catfish that is an oddball like mine and loves hanging out at the surface.
