dinosaur bichir

Could I have anything else in there? A striped raphael maybe?

Also do they eat snails?
Can have a Raphael catfish in there. Snails can get ingested. If they are larger than the mouth of the bichir then it’s safe.

Thanks y'all, you've been extremely helpful.

Length is more important than height for a bichir enclosure since they're shallow water fish, right?

One more question: For a planted 55g with sand as a substrate (in the hands of an experienced beginner but still a beginner), would a ropefish or a bichir be better? I know that one the one hand, although they are both the same length, ropefish are much thinner and so smaller. But you have to keep more than 1 ropefish right? I also heard they're more sensitive to nitrogen compounds than bichirs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

For the tank the dimensions on the fish u want to keep. A Senegalus will be fine in a standard 55g. A group of ropes will need a wider tank. Have to plan ahead in case u want to add more fish or plants decor.

Either one will be fine in a planted sand tank. Ropes can be fine by itself but play better with other rope fish. Way more active. One isn’t more sensitive than the other.

I’d suggest the ropes since you want to add other fish. Then u can also add smaller schooling fish and not worry too much.

Get both! Ropes and Bichirs! I have both and its great. Giant noodle party! Ropes tend to do better in company of more ropes, thats true. Snails some snails will be eaten. I have nerites that are ok for the most part but ramshorns get eaten, shells broken open. Not sure who is doing it as ive not seen them do it. Guessing one of the Bichirs.

I don't think I have room for both in a 55. Which ones are more active?

P.S. You guys have been extremely helpful! Thanks for the quick replies

On a totally different note, you guys seem very knowledgeable so can mystery snails and trapdoor snails breed? Because that's what it looks like they're doing right now. I have 1 trapdoor and 1 mystery snail and every day there is a new weird looking snail. I know this sounds crazy, but I think they are hybrids.

(I'll send pics of requested. Also the babies have eyestalks and proboscis like a trapdoor, but the shell looks weird.)
