he reminds me of volcanic rock

Brick is now officially 5". Body height over 2" without fins. A little over 1 inch thick. He's definitely losing that baby face...

In the ruler shot you can see his nose is at 14" and his tail is past the 9". So actually a hair over 5 inches. Future monster? Also, side by side comparisons now with Boss.

I notice in one of the previous pictures you have what looks like real spiderplant(s). Do you keep them entirely submerged? For long periods of time? Take them out for periods? Do your fish bother them? I know that is a new tank, but I am wondering if you used spiderplants in your previous tank(s). That was actually 6 questions. You could probably answer them in one or two sentences. Please I would like to know.

My neighbor grows and sells spiderplants and would give me starts. My tanks are planted but not my cichlid tanks as the cichlids systematicly dismantle any plants in their home tanks.

I have had real spider plants in the past. They do stay submerged and last a long time. The ones I have currently are silk. I got them from Michael's craft store. They have extremely realistic silk / plastic plants.

My fish don't pull up anything so far but they all like pushing / dragging the Pothos around and grabbing it. I heard guppies and mollies like to munch pothos roots but none of my fish bother (except Kong who likes pulling them out)

Spider plants need a lot of light when submerged.

Welp, Brick is growing up.Two nights ago he got his first 'scratch' near the top of his back on one side. Now he's starting to move / pull things. He didn't like a small silk plant all of a sudden (it was ok last week) and did his best to pull it up. Next he started attacking a small pile of rocks near the area where he roots in the sand. Last night he started jumping out of the water for pellets! Boss is still trying to assert dominance but that ain't gonna work much longer. They mostly squabble over food because Brick will snatch a pellet from Boss on the lips. So Boss charges, Brick holds his ground and they try to liplock BUT their mouths don't line up...so nothing happens.

So tonight they start pushing and shoving (mostly when I'm watching) Brick swims over to Boss' pot and drops 2 logs then swims off. I have no idea if this was a fluke or on purpose...I'd take a pic but no one wants to see logs.

So a w/c last night for Brick's scratch...it's down to 1/3 original size. I figured to wait a week or two to measure, but he is now almost larger than Boss. I'll wait another week for an official number. The stinker looks like a baby bass.

I was late getting in so everyone was really hungry. They all drifted front and center (Brick with his manic feed me dance). Patch twirls in her pot then snuggles in and moves sand around. Looks like she'll lay eggs again soon.

Pics showing Brick's scratch...it's nearly gone. It was nearly an inch long 3 days ago. It's the nick above his fin. His color is really coming in now, the lateral lines have turned bright orange this week. You also see the new growth edge on his fins. He gets these every 2-4 days. His head is the biggest thing on him now!

He loves going 'stealth' in the vines, shrub and pothos.
