Its not uncommon for bears to scavenge dead bodies. Meat is just meat, bear dont care where it came from. Weather or not eating the flesh of some one who ODed will effect the bear depends on the type of drug, its purity, how long the person has been dead, and several other factors.

So, what about that rumor of playing dead for a bear not to attack you? Seems I don't want to try this now.

Haha! I recall first seeing that on a Bugs Bunny cartoon when I was a kid and that's all I ever thought of it.....as for bears, I knew that they are pretty much opportunistic feeders so I wouldn't expect them to turn their nose up at a bit of carrion.

Hello; I guess it is a case of when you do not have anything better to do you may as well play dead. If it happens to work that is good and if it does not it is practice for really being dead.
I do not spend too much time in the Smokies of late but have been around bears there in the past. I have had only two fairly close meetings with the bears in the past. Once I was fishing in Abrams Creek when two cubs crossed it about 30 yards down stream. A short bit later their mother cam along. She looked me over. I stood still and she went on about her business.
Another time along a trial in the smokies a group of us came upon a large bear. The bear was on the trail so we stopped and backed up around a corner and waited for it to move.
I think the bear population is increased a lot the last few decades both inside and out of the park. I live in a slightly rural area and while still rare there have been some bears near by.
