Depends on the kind of bear -- for a brown bear play dead; for a black bear fight back, for a polar bear it doesn't matter either way, you're lunch.
I've met a few brown bears. Most of the times, I walked away, and so did the bear, with two exceptions. Once, someone came into school, saying there was a bear in the parking lot, and all the kids rushed out to see, and the bear ran away. Another time, I went to drop off my sister after visiting day at a sleepaway camp, and while I was waiting for whatever the stuff you have to wait for, a bear and two cubs came into the parking lot with me. The guy who worked there said they came by every day and paid him no attention. I was scared, but suck around, and they ignored me. I wouldn't kick one, but I don't think brown bears are very dangerous.

So, what about that rumor of playing dead for a bear not to attack you? Seems I don't want to try this now.
I don't know much about bear behavior, but from what Ive gathered watching documentaries, I think different bears species attack for different reasons. Like browns usually attack because its a female protecting young. While if a black bear attacks its often a predatory motive from a desperate animal. So playing dead might placate a raging mama but if the animal is intent on eating you, go down swingin' my man.

Not really true J.H. buddy; all bears are protective of their cubs, but brown bear mamas in particular are beserko crazy protective -- if you accidentally come between a sow and her cub(s) in the wild, there's a good chance you're a goner.

Oooh! I do have some insight here! Habituated wild animals can be very dangerous. All it takes is just the right wrong circumstances and there can be a devastating attack that wouldn't have happened if the animal wasn't so used to being close to people.
I know several other wildlife rehabbers around here, one of them specializes in white tail deer. He learned the hard way with a wild buck. It was attracted by a doe in season that he was rehabbing from a vehicle strike. The buck nearly killed him.

This is why I stick to water birds. Pretty unlikely to be mutalated by a duck lol.
