Why are these being sold????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are plenty of areas in the U.S. that have tropical climates yr round. Education would be the best means not restricting something to "order only'

I cant recall seeing them available in an lfs. Infact i wanted an arapaima i would just click click click.

Earlier i read somewhere that 1.5 million neon or cardinal tetras were either sold or imported every month (cant remember). Most likely million of them die each yr. Probably similar to the deaths arapaima experience. But on a much larger scale

I guess its the thought of someone could actually care for them if they wanted to that gives that warm fuzzy feeling.

Kind of like bettas. Pimas can't even begin to touch the scale of suffering of bettas. Stuck in a clear pot with a plant above you

If you want to ban the sell of something. Lets start with this designer deformities. Blood parent's, flowerhorn, & those funky goldfish that I swear I hear a little voice saying "kill me please" everytime I see them.

That's going to be going through my head from now on...thanks.

I will never look at those fish the same again lol.

That comment I made 10 yrs ago, was on a local forum. No tropical winds up here. Arapaima have no business being sold where I live, unless it's at the local supermarket. Clearly lots of fish die because of this hobby of ours, this has already been covered, and then some. The point is that promoting outright cruelty at any level in this hobby should be frowned upon, no matter the species.

Again, no one is talking about banning, anything.

Who's promoting cruelty? This is s new one.

In the wild, bettas live out their lives in ditches, and small bodies of water, and in the dry season, often mud puddles. Hence their ability to take 02 from the air. Absolutely no comparison to a fish with a brain the size of a dog, that lives in massive watersheds in the wild, such as an Arapaima.

I thought betta fish were found in rice paddies and flood plans.

I was under the impression allot of prima were actually farm raised

Well that's your opinion. Inadequate care is inadequate care to me. When's the last time you've seen a designer betta in a rice paddy anyway? These little guys sit in sewage waiting to get adopted then either tossed in some more sewage or put in a tall tank with fast flowing water.

I get the massive size point being made, but really what makes these so special than all the other cases? Peacock bass, clown knives, fire eels, birchirs, pacu, the numerous gigantic catfish available, etc etc. I never see pimas but always see these others in large qualities especially pacu and the catfish. So wheres this moral cutoff point?
