If you were to get him a girl friend, it might be best to get him at least 3 females, if the tank is large enough.
In many cases just getting 1 can be only a 50/50 chance that she survives his advances.
If you get 3 or more, his resulting libido will be spread out among the group, so less chance of a stressful outcome.
A friend of mine kept a large male with a harem of about 6 females, and the tank was always calm.
The male would spawn with one in a corner, and another a few weeks later, maintaining a kind of detente.
I would also suggest, if you end up getting a pair from the group, remove any other species of cichlids for their own safety, and any Pleco/bottom feeder types, they tend to eat eggs and wrigglers, which can discombobulate the pair bond, also leading to the (usually) females death, and maybe the bottom feeder.
