Cruelty to fish and crustaceans

The story of saving the fish is just sensational news. If I went out and told everyone I know that I fried my fish alive no one would bat an eyelash. I don't think I'll be reported either. If I said the same about my dog or cat, it's a different story...

Since I am a fisherman in my spare time, I don't have a problem with killing and eating any particular (edible) fish.

Now, if that fish is my pet, well then it is family, and thus not food for me nor my dog & cat.

But someone else's fish? It's just another fish to me. Net it into the boat or toss it back. Just a fish.

UNLESS it's my pet fish, then hands off! :hitting:

I think torture of animals is abominable. The animals are here for our purposes AND we for their's. Survival without them would be almost impossible, but we can't consider their welfare above the welfare of humans. The answer to animal cruelty isn't cruelty to humans.

In my 64th year of life I see less and less willingness to forgive others over time. I see more willingness to indulge ourselves in irrational alarmism and useless feuds over everything.

I worry far more about man versus man than man versus animals. I gotta feeling the lobsters will still be here after we're all extinct.

That depends on what part of the world you live in. Some places that's called Tuesday night

Where I live we're dehumanizing humans and humanizing animals

Some even think saving an animal over a kid is ok...

Hello; Yeah I recall that disturbing thread. The "some" are members of this very forum. Wish I could have thought of this a post or two ago. That is what I was getting at some on here are more worried about an animal than people.

I moved from a city full of these people. Scary stuff

Hello; yes to this. I go to a bit of extra trouble in that I either use barbless hooks or bend the barbs down. I do catch and release because I fish for the fun of it. I do from time to time keep and eat a fish but not often.
Over the decades I have been in homes where aquariums have been neglected. Early on I would say something but a few decades ago I just started going on my way.
When I find a fish shop with poor tanks I just do not buy there. I look around at all the tanks. If too many are nasty I just walk out. If I spot ick in one tank or a dead fish in only one tank and the other tanks look ok I will mention it to the staff. Depends on their answer as to if I will shop there again. I never buy from a shop with ick in a tank but may come back in a few weeks to check again.

I think we should care for animals and humans at the same time, rather than drawing a separation line as if it is two different issues. Back in history people killed other people over their animals because it was a matter of life and death.

I personally feel now its gone the other direction, since most of us are removed from nature and live in the cities. We now don't know the history of the animal in the dinner plate, so it's ok to waste it....

My grandmother, RIP, used to name the little cute goats after us. We loved them, pet them, entertained them and later on we ate them.

Many years ago I recall a bunch of kids in our own basement throwing stones at a little kitten. I find these scenarios unnecessary and cruel. Whether you're going to eat that animal or not, it still deserves a happy life while alive and deserves a fast and pain free death if its raised for dinner.

Cruelty to animals exists in that sense. There is also a tendency for total disregard for wild life. Take plastics in the ocean as a fresh example, pollution in rivers in the third world, also the consequences to nature of prawn farming, cow farming, etc...We just have to find alternative solutions if our kids are to live a peaceful life, and raising concerns for animals, plants and nature in general is part of that battle.

Hello; While I understand this point of view there are some problems with it. I go along with it but only up to a point. Let me use a few examples.
Say we codify into law this idea. There is a house on fire with two dogs and two children inside. Are the fire fighters required to view the dogs as equally worth saving with the children? If the two children are saved should the fire fighters be expected to go back in at the risk of life for the dogs?
If a family has a sick dog and a sick human are they to give equal money to treat the animal without a choice? What if there is not money to get medicine for both?

I get that in a perfect world none of these hard choices would not have to be made. But in the world as is these and other examples can be found. A question came up in a past thread but was not addressed because the Mods closed it. That question was about all the human malnutrition and starvation around the world while many of us have very well fed dogs, cats and fish. I guess some fish food ingredients are not so much compatable for humans but dog and cat food sure are.
So if human and animals care are the same issue then how do we square having fat dogs and cats when there are starving humans? My guess at this answer is a person looks at his/her own dog or cat and somehow blocks out from their mind that the animal is getting food that a starving human can use.

Do I have a point? Maybe we all make choices on priorities. To me a child is always over any animal when I am around them. I may go back to help an animal if circumstance allows but a child will get 1st attention. I also will not expect a fire fighters to risk their lives for a dog any more than for my recliner. If they can get a dog out safely sure, but not if it is risky. For a child I expect them to go in if there is any chance.

Well, in a scenario like that one has got to be crazy to save the animal before the kid.
However, plenty of true life stories where the cat or dog alerted the family to fire, thus saving them.

I think animals deserve proper care and respect.

I don't expect my fish to save me from flooding, lol, but they're in my care not because of choice of their own, so they have the right to be taken care of properly, and they deserve the same in nature, regardless. We share nature with them, it is not ours to destroy.

I also will not expect a fire fighters to risk their lives for a dog any more than for my recliner.

Firefighters removed how many of those you know would jump into the fire for someone else's kid, never mind the dog or the cat...

A LOT of people talk out of their ass on forums, where anonymity is king, and real life consequences are zero.
No normal sane person would place the life of an animal before that of a human child.

I witnessed the end result of an infant being murdered when I was 9 yrs of age. At my current job I see death on a regular basis. The death of a child, or any human for that matter is not something that the vast majority of the population will/would take lightly, when faced with that kind of decision. It's easy to talk smack on a chat board, not so simple when real lives are involved.

This case seems like massive overkill to me, and downright nuts that his mug shot was posted on TV. I agree with this being a money grab, and sensationalism. Perhaps it's election time in that jurisdiction, DA, Sherriff, etc?
