Biohome media or k1

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Media is media, bacteria will grow on anything.

However it depends on your stocking as to what's best, I use the k1 as keep Ray's and it is know to manage high bio loads and ammonia spikes really well.

However I also have about 20kg of standard media in sump as well as the 100l k1.

Best to have too much!!

K1 never has to be cleaned. Don' get me wrong I love the bio home, if I was going to buy media again it would be k1 all the way

True, at the moment the tank is in my living room and is abit noisy because of the air to turn the k1 I would like to replace it with biohome or something so it’s quieter but I don’t want to do this if it makes my filter less effective.
The noise doesnt bother me just others.

Both are good. It just depends on your preference. I prefer my tanks to be quiet so I can enjoy music and hold a conversation easier. K1 is far more superior IMO except the only drawback is that it’s loud from k1 crashing and require a big pump to run it. The noise level remind of being in a work shop with compressors running power tools.

Biohome works well and I have never washed biohome ultimates since I have mechanical filters in before biohome. It does reduce the nitrates to about 5ppm. I have not changed the water for a month and half and I know they are expensive but worth it.

The benifit and difference in k1 is that it is tumbled allowing the old biofilm to be knocked off and the new stronger biofilm to work unhindered by the old film coating. With most biomedia it gets covered by old biofilm and needs to be rinsed off which usually doesnt happen at least often enough.

Ive wondered about this. What would your nitrates be with "regular" media? Any idea? Have you switched to biohome from something else and your nitrate reading are different now? If so how long did it take to change? Obviously this is a desired effect and to have both types of bioactivity is something I have been striving for.
