I've never run K1 but noise is a major issue for me. Tanks are like children, they should be seen not heard. . Seriously though, the noise doesn't outwiegh the no maintenance. It's easy to clean bags of media, just pull it and shake in a 5 gallon bucket quick and put it back. Easy peasy!

Biohome works well and I have never washed biohome ultimates since I have mechanical filters in before biohome. It does reduce the nitrates to about 5ppm. I have not changed the water for a month and half and I know they are expensive but worth it.

Have you ever taking a TDS reading of your tank? How much does it differ from your tap?
