Poor Man's Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah. Golden wonder Panchax IME will eat 2-3" Praecox rainbows.
The last one left is a female Threadfin, and it either thinks it's a Pike cichlid (not knowing that Pike Cichlids should hate each other) or it thinks the Pike Cichlid is a Threadfin Rainbowfish. Either way, it's pretty fun watching it follow the Pike Cichlid around all the time.

I'm pretty sure one of my killis ate two threadfin rainbows already.
Mine's eaten baby guppies, crickets, ghost shrimp, small worms, and insect larvae. Like arowanas, the best food for them is insects as that is their natural diet, albeit they should have a mixed diet, but I think that's the best staple for them
for mine eating a guppy
for mine eating a cricket

Probably not what you are looking for, but I have always thought plakat bettas resembled mini arowana. They also make great pets and can live in tiny aquariums!

+1 was going to say the same, betta and esp. plakats are very much like super-mini Aros: besides having a similar shape, they're both carnivores; both have beautiful finnage; both come from somewhat lower PH southeast Asian waters (though are hardy enough to adapt to higher PH), and they both can breathe air from top of the tank (if even in different ways). But like you said, probably not what OP had in mind :)

No, none of the suggestions look aros. Simply surface hugging and carnivore don’t make them Eros. The killi jump off the water to hunk crickets behave like water monkey, but look more like live bearer. The betta is motionless fish that look like cichlid. The chalceus has Eros scales, but doesn’t move like Eros. Eros has the prehistorical predator look, and graceful movement that there are no second except another Eros species.

I would definitely disagree about being motionless. My betta never stops moving and acts like a flowerhorn, flares at me and begs for food whenever I walk into the bathroom. Has quickly become a favorite fish of mine, though it was a "rescue" I saved from euthanasia due to a large tumor. I also think they look much more like a tiny aro than a cichlid. Mostly due to upturned insect-feeding mouth and similar body shape.
