Single male convict. You'll get beautiful colors and finnage when he's not stressed out competing
I actually like this idea, an under rated fish done right is a rare thing. Set it up correctly and it would be a great tank.

Angelfish might be an option. I like my fish to have room to swim so i wouldn't put a jd in a 30 gallon.Acara, angelfish (if deep enough), puffer, giant Betta, ram, convict, there’s a couple of options...not sure if any of those fit your taste...if your thinking larger fish like a Jack Dempsey or green terror they wouldn’t work in such a small tank

I had a planted tank and sold it due to a busy scheduled. I don't think i can keep planted tanks.Do it nice planted with rocks and drift wood sticking out from back and tie anubias on the drift wood. Do pea puffers! Get a male and about 5 females. If you do rocks sticks and plants right youd be golden.
If getting a Convict though you'd want to spend the time and money to get a well bred one. The majority around are poorly bred. Be a shame to set up a tank with just one hoping he'll be nice in a year or two once mature. And then discover, oh...He's just grey and muddy due to decades of inbreeding. That is an option.
Agree, try to find ones that are really dark. Or you can try other Cryptoheros species, there are many nice ones out there. I've never kept them before but I like the blue eyes and the yellow on the Myrnae. Also Sajica's are coolIf getting a Convict though you'd want to spend the time and money to get a well bred one.
