Stand risers and leveling (stock type stand)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes.

I could probably get rid of the outside 2x8. The 2 boards running vertical on either side of the sump are joints.
Just think of it as a platform. Say you nailed together a square using 2X4s. The you put 2X4 studs/ joists between. Layed on the ground it is solid. Because it all rests on the ground. Without the studs, if you stood on one 2X4 it may start to roll over. With enough weight.
I just try to think about this stuff as simple as possible. Sort of "what could go wrong".

That's why im probably going 4x4. It's so simple to brace and is rock solid. This other way is a lot of work for only an extra inch (that's what she said).

Dang engineers always blowing the budget :)

The point of the rise is clearance to service a skimmer. The frame needs to be fairly open so the 75 can sit on the concrete

Sorry I missed the point about the overhead clearance. Forget about sheathing. Just build a rectangular frame that is Stout.

You don't want to know what I spent for lumber last week but I just bought a nice straight 4×6×8' long for $13 at Lowes. There it is holding up my ceiling.

Two of those would cost you $26 + tax.

I remember what it's like to be young and underfunded but is it that desperate that you are wedded to undersized charity Lumber?

Testy testy. That charity wood is select wood I asked if I could have unlike those lowes rocking chair legs your supporting that ceiling with :nutkick:

The curvature is really an illusion. There isn't a straight line in that photo. (Check out the aluminum door frame.)

Sorry about the charity lumber thing. Some of that shoring is used lumber. (Stuff the termites didn't quite get to.) I recycle all sorts of things into things I need, even when money isn't an object.

It's fun.

Remember the movie Apollo 13 where the air scrubber fails and they have to engineer one from duct tape and gym socks, and leftover plasticware? This is every engineer's dream game. Figuring out how to make things needed, from what is available . . . to make magic from junk, with the least effort, at a lower cost than the next guy.

Anyhow, what do you have to work with so far?

I'm only kidding around with you. 90% of the wood has select stickers though. We're both choice lumber hoarders his wife just got fed up before mine lol. One of the few things that really aggravates me is picking through crooked wood at Lowe's or HD.

Ironically I'm looking at those same 4x6 to get a 5 5/8 rise.

I might just store the stock stand and build my own. Its really hard to work with I couldn't even fit a 40b in it without setting the stand on top.

I think building your own is the best idea. No compromises.

It just doesnt sit right not being able to pull the sump. I guess I could run it right beside it under my smaller tanks.

I may just pay more and get a tank with a different warranty. Lifetime if it's on a crappy stand is starting to be a buzz kill.

Have you ever returned a tank due to warranty? I just got hosed by a dealer and will most likely not get any good result.

I don't buy Toyotas for the warranty. I buy them for the reputation.
They are what they are and everyone knows.
But IMO a warranty is a paper dream used for bait.
I buy everything based on reputation or my own judgement.

Anyhow, anybody can build a better stand than a Petco type, just by making a copy & eliminating the fiberboard.

BTW I do use it in my stands, but it is waterproofed completely with laminate and glue.
