haggling a fish away from petsmart

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The biggest problem for me is that they are encouraging customers that this is in fact an acceptable tank for a fish this size. It's no wonder we have so many big fish little tank problems in this hobby. Freakin petsmart.

This is a link to the particular store the fish is at if anyone is interested. I'm gonna attempt to get some correspondence through to their manager and maybe corporate too. I don't think it's asking too much to set up a larger tank.

No they weren't the same people.

The tank has a sign that states:

This is LOCHNESS.
He was given to us by a customer.
He is not for sale!

So you correctly predicted two years ago that it was a customer who dropped it off. I couldn't take the fish if I wanted to now. No room in my tanks for that beast. But i assume many people have asked because of the prominent not for sale sign. There must be a long term employee there that is dedicated to the fish though.

Everything is for sale. Take your cash show it to the manager tell them you got a bigger tank for it.

Didn't work two years ago when I had the space. As I said I don't have the space for it now, nor do I really desire to keep a huge gibbiceps at this point, though it is a beautiful fish.

Besides, we're talking about petsmart. I doubt they would care if i waved around a couple bills and demanded a sale. It's not like the manager is making commission off of fish sales.

my take, if someone refuses an offer, it just means the offer isn't too good to refuse

the tank may be a bit narrow but on the bright side, after 2 years, it still looking healthy

I'm fuming at this, seriously. A pet shop of all establishments neglecting an animals needs. On this forum, in our little world, and our hobby is a little world, we would all consider that fish in that tank as a massive no no, and rightly so. If it was a dog kept chained up in a tiny kennel all day there would be uproar. But because it's just a fish, who cares. I mean what channels can you go down to complain? Who'd listen, let alone do something about it?

You'd think that the manager of a pet shop that sells fish would at least have a basic understanding of the fishes needs. And if not, at least listen to advice given to him from someone who does.

But the worse thing, as someone's already pointed out, is that he is showing anybody who comes into the store that it's fine to keep a large fish in a tank that's way too small. The manager of that store is a complete and utter twunt.

I wouldn't consider it a word that a lady should regularly use! But in circumstances such as this I think it would be more than acceptable. I'm glad I could be of assistance in broadening your vocabulary. :grinyes:

I wouldn’t worry about a ladies vocabulary lol I work with mostly construction guys and find it difficult to be in the office setting.

I agree with your ideals. The only point I have to make is its retail not a true pet shop. Yes they sell animals but in reality they sell things for animals more so.
Someone posted about the manager not caring because its not commission, true but most retail store managers have a bonus based off of numbers and one of the numbers is sales $ and % above last year. So the manager should be trying to make sales and encouraging their team members to do the same.
