Would a solo carpintis be an issue in a 180g cichlid community? I'm trying to finalize my stocking list, and I really like the carpintis, plus would like a centerpiece fish. Don't want my other fish to get murdered tho.

The main inhabitants will be (relatively) peaceful Amatitlania and Archocentrus species, maybe some EBJD.

I suggest not adding the Carpintis they are too aggressive for the others.

I agree with tlindsey tlindsey very viscous fish. I ordered a male and female from COTA. He killed her in three days.
Also got a group of 1in fry from Jeff Rapps, top male picked off 3 siblings.

Ok, that's good to know. Has anyone seen similar aggression toward non-conspecifics? Most likely not going to add one though.

Cool, yeah, not doing it. It'll be a nice mix of fish anyway.

The only other fish I was considering is a hetrospilus. I've heard they are peaceful and stay relatively small. Leaning toward not adding more species though.

Heterospilus would be a better choice than a carpintis to mix with the convict types and ebjd. You still will have to keep an eye out of course, these are cichlids, but 180 sounds like a good size to attempt mixing a bunch of these fish.

I agree with the others, I have kept and bred carpintus. They are normally as aggressive as the others state.
A 180 would be a nice size tankfor just a pair of adults with no other fish.
I like your aesthetic. Don't always agree with it as a hard rule or limit to what can be done, but I like it. I can appreciate different approaches and different types of tanks, from busy with fish to nicely aquascaped with very few fish, but there's something to be said for a natural looking tank with a low population density that more closely resembles the natural habitat of some species.

I keep my carpintis in a 125 with a with an angel fish , a few groumi , parrots and small bass , fh, flagtails ,
He’s about 3 inch he’s aggressive but get along with everyone plenty of space nothing is over 3 inch
