Looking for reliable submersible pump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since any centrifugal pump can be throttled back using a valve on the outflow, I find extra mechanical or computer technology that can "screw up" to be surpluferous.
I started using Mag Drive pumps in the mid 80s and still had some working in 2010.
I did replace a few impellers, and volutes over that time, some my fault when experimenting with play sand as substrate (way too light getting to the impellers, those problems stopped after switching to heavier PFS.)
The disadvantages of Mags were they tend to get loud (hum) as they age, and are gluttenous suckers electricity, compared to newer technology pumps, and produce excess heat.
As they wore out. I started switching to Laguna pond pumps, less noisy, and less energy use, Also like the big surrounding cage (although chinsy screw ports) that project the pump from debris.

My only bugaboo with them, is that they don't(didn't) have standard PVC threading for unions and valves on the pump.

Electric consumption is a top priority for me when choosing pumps/filters.

A buddy on here swears by laguna

They've come a long way with energy efficient pumps. Ac pumps even now have smart chips that control consumption when you throttle them back.

I've heard good things about Laguna and reeflo darts.

Panworlds are awesome but I sold mine because its like 180w @ 1900gph

Our LFS refuses to sell Jebao after having many returns.

I'm thinking of WiFi tech so I can shut off the pump from another location. A water alarm on my cell is not enough. ;)

So far 5 sump systems using cheapo Harbor Freight pond pumps, and no catastrophic overflows.
But they are noisy, with a 60hz thrum, so I hate them.

I have recently bought 2 DC pumps, and both 4000 litres/1000 gph. Both SW approved.

The newest is the Simplicity 1000DC on a 75g, and I have the Eco DC4000 on a 55g.

They both replaced 365gph pond pumps and are much quieter and stronger.
BUT pond pump = $30 and these were each $130, so you pay.

The Simplicity has no wavemaker functions, where the Eco has multiple adjustable modes.
They have similar peformance at a 34" head. The Simplicity has been flawless from day one.

But I had binding issues with the ECO. I had to disassemble the pump and trim the casting sprue on the main bearing carrier. I was getting an error code 007, each time it started, and it would balk. Once trimmed, shaft alignment was achieved & now it runs flawlessly.

I do not like the 24vdc power bricks. They produce unwanted heat in summer, but in a pinch I think these will pumps will run from two car batteries for a long time. Also I see no reason the bricks couldn't be remotely mounted instead of under the tank. I have one on a rack overhead so it won't warm the tank.

I actually have 6 big RV batteries to run from, which was one reason to buy DC pumps.

But I haven't tried this yet.

What water alarm/app are you using Ulu?

Btw, hate to break it to you guys :) but I'm 99% sure Simplicity pumps are re-branded DCT Jebao/Jecod pumps from about 4 years ago:

Simplicity 1000DC:
1380676

Jebao DCT 4000:
1380682

I wouldn't be surprised at all, Jebao has these agreements with quite a few companies (incl. other Chinese companies + overseas ones) -- like many Chinese manufacturers they really don't care how they're sold, they just want to move units.

That said if you're getting locally serviced support & warranties on them, that's definitely a big plus, would be about impossible for me to get same here lol.

Sunsun Jtp-5800

1 year in the sand and impeller still as good as new

Ive got one jtp-14000 and that thing is a beast. Only downside is the knob to turn the flow down gets easily clogged with sand as substrate. Used to feed a beadfilter with it until i blew the outlet of the filter of. Now i use the pump just for extra flow and oxygenation of the water with an makeshift venturipipe on the pump made from some scrap pvc i had laying around.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. I didn't think it's re-branded myself. I thought it' was a knock-off.

Agree on the knob to turn flow down part... lucky mine always on max open so no need for adjustment

Yeah i have mine on max atm. But when i had the beadfilter i had to turn it down to half. When the filter broke i hade a hard time getting it back to full :)
