Not to be a chicken party pooper or alarmist but I was thinking about your chicks when I saw this article about a recent salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry farms and that has extended to about 41 states (not sure yours is on the list) -- it advises not to let younger kids hold or kiss baby chicks.

Not a party pooper. Salmonella is something we need to be careful of with a few of our pets. These guys, my daughters parrot, and our turtles. I do my best to enforce hand washing before and after handling any pets. In the future I won’t be keeping chicks/keets in the kitchen either. Part of my coop plans include an area to brood chicks:)

Today was so hot and muggy! I don’t have ventilation cut into the bin yet so it got way too hot for the guineas. It forced me to let them out all at once instead of the slow release I had planned on.
All was fine at first. They perched on the doorstep and refused to come out for the first few hours.
Later while I was watching the kids at the pool I heard a bunch of squawking. I took off running thinking the cats jumped the fence and were attacking the birds!
Turns out 4 had flown over the fence and were putting up a fuss. I called my daughter over to help get them back in the fence and they stayed in there for a few hours.
Go to get them in for the night and one got spooked and took off into the woods. Ugh. I was so irritated and prepared for the worse.
Likely a cat dragging it’s dead body back to the house....

A couple hours later I go to let the dogs out and there is the missing guinea! So I snuck out with my koi net and cornered it by the pond. I caught it before it had a chance to run! So happy. Haha. Though I think it will be forever afraid of nets. Lol

Anyway, here they are exploring outside the coop. FF70376D-5F16-4CF8-A596-81138EA8FEA5.png84C51B6C-738E-4E24-8C03-9811076A4A45.png

The grew so fast. Happy to hear you found the one that ran into the woods.

They have! Very fast. Still not fully feathered with their adult feathers, but they are getting there.
I was so relieved to get the missing one back. I know it’s kinda inevitable that we will lose some, but I want to put that off for as long as I can.

It’s been over a month since I last updated.
My step dad came out back in July and cut a couple windows for me. It’s made a big difference!
My husband added the hardware to make working windows. He even went as far as grinding the ends off the self tapping screws, then covered them in silicone so I won’t accidentally get hurt on them. I love how they turned out!

I’ve been spending a bit more time around the guineas and taken a few pictures. 3A55EDCC-42BD-4DC6-86E2-3E33FEA264CA.png
