A school I used to go is starting up a 265 and I figured I’d share the progress on here. I will be helping the 4th graders that are going to be taking care of it.

Here is how far they’ve gotten. I’m not quite sure what the hole above the tank is going to be for. I’m thinking it’ll be lighting since it is going to be an aquaponics system.
The table is no longer there.

Time for an updateDA51E78F-2502-4332-BE4F-F3EED184CCD9.jpeg

1. The table is back
2. It is being filled
3. I have found out it will be ran off of two canisters, I will find out which ones later.
4. I have found out the stocking will be koi.
5. I may get to help with the water changes and filter maintenance.

The tank was bought from and is going to be taken care of by Neptune’s Reef. Here is their website.

If you’re ever in Georgia and want to visit an awesome saltwater focused store then come here. They can also bring in freshwater fish for you.

I wonder why they decided to go with koi as saltwater specialist store???

Would have been neat to have a s/w tank of that size...

Wish my school wouldve kept a tank.
Every school should have one I believe, it helps the students develop certain traits such as caring for animals.

I actually have the answer in my original post but it wasn't clear so I’ll make it clear now. The tank is going to be used for aquaponics. I originally was going to suggest angelfish and other colorful/beautiful/graceful fish but koi make more sense. The main reason they’re going with koi is because of the high bioload they produce which will help with the aquaponics.

Must be a cool school. You should try to convince them to go for a tropical community set up. It's more diverse an I think more entertaining and educational for the kids.
Nice of you to offer to help out too.

It is indeed a cool school, the best in the county.
I originally was going to but koi are more appropriate bioload wise than say tetra sized fish along with a few 6 inchers.
The main educational part is them taking care of the tank, learning about the maintenance (I think), and learning about aquaponics. I’m not sure just what the kids are going to be doing (they’re in 4th grade) but supposedly they’re going to be do about 90% of the work. Water changes and filter maintenance are not part of the 90% so I don’t know what makes up the 90% except maybe feeding, turning the lights on and off, and maybe caring for the plants.

Man I’ll tell you what, a tank this big is too big for me to not be involved in. I had to get involved in someway somehow and filter maintenance and water changes are the perfect way to get involved. It’ll also help me out personally as I’ll get experience caring for a larger tank. Helping to take care of a seven foot long, two feet wide, and two and a half feet tall will be quite the nice change from my 75 gallons.

I’m not sure as I didn’t talk numbers, just the general stuff. I personally would have went with fancy goldfish as they get smaller, you can have more, and I figure the bioload would be around the same in my uneducated opinion.
I’m sure that if the koi out grow the tank Neptune’s reef will sell them to someone else, probably with a pond, and restock the tank with smaller koi. Not a bad business strategy to be honest.
