SunSun HW-5000 Coming Soon 1215 gph

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good for you, let us know what you think after receiving and setting it up.
Well i've had it setup and running for about a week now, man does this thing put out some water! i was skeptical about how much flow it would have but even with 1 tray filled with filter floss and the other 2 filled to the brim with bio media. Biohome ultimate in 1 tray and 6 pounds of seachem matrix in another. All in all it so far seems like an awesome filter, huge upgrade from previous sunsun in both quality and performance.

Congratulations Fish Tank Travis Fish Tank Travis on the baby girl! Screw the filter, that baby will change your whole world. But I’m with Matteus Matteus lets hear an update down the road.

That band type clamp for the lid scares the crap out of me. I have seen far to many of those things fail on various types of equipment. For now I'll keep my FX's and wait until others have some time on them. That knucklehead Jay on YouTube was bragging about it big time, but of course he was it showed up on his porch for free. Then he's bragging about the flow and he's running it with zero media in it. You're kidding right??? A month prior he was saying how he would never trust a filter with a band style clamp like that. Sure is funny how opinions change when you get something for nothing. I lost respect for him after that. I'll wait for the reviews from folks that actually spent their hard earned money on it. Later

IME, the gph rating SunSun gives is probably the bare pump sitting in water. Once you take into account the hose and fitting restrictions, and filling it with media, you will probably lose at least a third of that flow, if not closer to half. I would say you’d be lucky to get 800 gph once it’s all setup. That’s still really good flow though.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any need for one of these filters and will probably not be getting one, at least not anytime soon. I do have a 303B on my son’s 29 gal tank. My 220 has a 55 gal sump though, so I have nothing to put it on.

I am looking forward to hearing from anyone else that gets it for one of their tanks. If I had to choose between this or an FX6, I would go with this HW-5000 for sure.

Correct me if I am wrong, aren't all brands of pumps rating based on bare pump?

Flow ratings are great, but I haven't had a great experience with off brand canister filters. At best you get something that lasts until a part breaks and you cant get a replacement. At worst you get a leak. I wish they would quit putting uv sterilizers in as well. All I need is a non replaceable quartz sleeve.

The fx6 or eheim 2262 are going to last and when you need replacement parts they will be available.

Well i'm 2 months in on my HW-5000, experienced my first issue with it, if you dont properly seat the giant oring for the lid, the system will take in air and it will reduce the flow rate considerably due to this, it doesn't leak though fortunately. It's easily remedied by making sure you properly seat the oring. Other than that little hiccup this thing is still a beast! i enjoy having a convenient feed button on it, which also works well to allow it to purge all air from the system, i'm amazed how good the flow is on this, the top of my tank sits 65" off the ground, and i have this canister sitting on the ground, yet with 1 tray of filter pads, 1 tray of seachem matrix(filled to the brim), and 1 tray of biohome ultimate also filled to the brim, this thing still manages to put out more water than an fx6.

Just got one (that I don’t need as usual)....

Anywhoo, the hw5000 build materials (plastic) seems quite thick, definetly higher quality than the harder sunsun 304b/404b filter, and waay better than the Odyssea CFS cans ( of which I own a 700 and a still NIB 1200/1400).

I “THOUGHT” I was just gonna swap it out with my FX6 while keeping the current hoses/valves installed, but the valves are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. Apparently the FX6/FX5/FX4 valves which I KNOW FOR A FACT ARE interchangeable (as I own all 3)between these models, are to small inner diameter wise. The fluval valves will NOT slide over the HW5000 intake/output ports on the HW5000 lid.

Other than that, I first tore it apart and lubed ALL of the seals, and put in on the tank as a secondary to a FX4 on a 75.... for now running on P010 power level. Also, it does the 2 minute purge just like an FX after first startup.

Will update after some time passes, but so far “seems” to be worth the 180bux.
Guess we’ll see...

Well, bern running 2-4 hours or so on low (P010) and quiet, but as soon as I turn it up, air bubble noises.

Shane, how EXACTLY did you resolve the issue with the main lid oring and air ingestion issues? Before I even put in service, I put a healthy coating of silicone grease on ALL the orings/seals...
