SunSun HW-5000 Coming Soon 1215 gph

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, noticed a small dripping leak this morning before leaving for work. Seems to be coming from where the valve attaches to the output port. Just a drop every 5 minutes, but still. Oh and of course still quiet until I turn its power up to about P020 or above, then you can tell it's still sucking air from somewhere.

I'm wondering if the air is being sucked IN from the space between the input valve and the input port on the lid, as NEITHER feels as firmly attached/installed as the valves on my Fluval FX's. I supposed some better sealing orings on those ports where the valves attach might help as they did feel lose compared to the way the FX port orings were firmly attached...

Ya get what ya pay for..LOL

Well, bern running 2-4 hours or so on low (P010) and quiet, but as soon as I turn it up, air bubble noises.

Shane, how EXACTLY did you resolve the issue with the main lid oring and air ingestion issues? Before I even put in service, I put a healthy coating of silicone grease on ALL the orings/seals...
Well first off, after initial startup i had to purge mine a few times to get all the air out, all my filter media was new and still had pockets of air in it, simply hitting the 15min feed button worked to use as an effective air purge, i had to do this a few times over a day or so. Then after the initial purges if you are intaking air pull off your intake/output hoses, open the lid, take out the big rubber oring and dry it off with a towel, same for the edges of the lid where the oring sits, and the edges of the cannister where it sits( this allows you to set the oring back in place without it popping back up) but most importantly when you set the oring in place make sure not to twist it when you roll it into place on the cannister. For me this is all i needed to fix the issue, i didn't even use silicone grease or anything of the sort. Also one other place where you might get a bad seal is the intake/outputs. Sometimes they dont quite lock in right and you need to pull them off and relock them down.

Thx to you and Shane for sharing your experiences, it seems like Sunsun has a couple of issues to work out with this latest model, hopefully they'll be solved in future production runs. It might be useless to email your feedback to Sunsun, but who knows it could help (or hopefully Sunsun checks out MFK and similar popular sites).

Contacted the seller and asked about getting a new ouput valve to replace the leaking one, and inquired about the air ingestion noises.

I was very disappointed with the replies (evidently they have no spare vales/parts either) so I'm sending it back since I dont need it anyway, and I just cant have something leaking even just a little bit on my hardwood floors. I just don't "trust" this cannister filter at this point, it needs more work. I will admit, I loved the controller and the flow though, quite nice! The hose design and baskets weren't a bad spin on the Fluval design either.

Like always , ya get what ya pay for. Thankfully I didn't take my FX4 off-line on that tank...

Is that a sunsun? Marineland canisters have side clamps like that. I have had C530s for 5 years now and no problems or complaints.

All SunSun's/Aquatop's, polar aurora & marinelands are all "pretty much" the same filters. (I have 1 Aquatop and 3 Sunsuns).

Not sure who copied who, but they're all different versions of the same basic design. These "newer" versions from Sunsun however(hw 3000 and hw5000 )with the DC motors that can control the "flow rate" via motor speed seem to possibly be of their OWN design, as I personally haven't seen an equivalent Marineland "version" thus far...

my sunsun emptied 20 gallons from my 120 gallon after about a year of service.....bad valves. Never again. Fluval fx4-6 are vastly superior in every way and worth every penny.

Do you by chance have a 5000? Tough to find and trust reviews from most places.
I do, and it's still working perfectly for me. A little hiccup with getting the valves and o-ring to seal but other than that it works great, and puts out a ton of water.
