alright, right now in the rough draft planning stage and I doodled (i can't help myself I love doodling plans for animals) a rough sketch of how I might want things to go so bear with me here. probably going to have a bunch of java ferns and only like 3 tiger lotus plants in the back. big driftwood with some smaller ones to create little alcoves and have a log that will go in front of that, hoping the lotus will hide the intake and outtake valves or maybe find a type of tall grass that will withstand FM, are they rough on plants more so than other cichlids? please excuse the extreme rough draft.

Not too rough on plants at all actually. The lotus will hold up fine. If you don't want it taking over I'd put it in some kind of planter.

alright, I'll find some small mesh pots somewhere then for the lotus that way water can flow through easier. thank you again by the way!

Welcome and yeah that could work. I just use a 3" PVC coupling that I hide with rocks from the front. (Picture is from the back to show the pvc

been hearing some horror stories about using sand and how it can trap toxic gases, have to say that has made me a little on edge, I may stick to very fine gravel but I am unsure, I've had no experience with sand before.

Firemouths move a lot of sand. As long as you don't go crazy with it and stir it up occasionally you shouldn't have an issue. You could always add a few Malaysian trumpet snails to keep it stirred and help cleanup

I plant in sand. Might be gravel mixed in a bit but mostly sand. I use a root tab when first planting or if I move something. No other ferts or anything for me.
