been hearing some horror stories about using sand and how it can trap toxic gases, have to say that has made me a little on edge, I may stick to very fine gravel but I am unsure, I've had no experience with sand before.

To avoid this don’t make the substrate too thick. I also stir it up a little when doing water changes. The gases do release and you can smell it if you wait too long.

The trumpet snails breed so fast I've never noticed them getting eaten. Once they're bigger than like a grain of rice the shell is quite tough to crush. And I've had nerite snails with firemouths. No real issues there

My Firemouth also didn't bother nerite snails. Mine where juvenile not adult so can't comment on adult interactions.

Tho nerite snails come with their own issue, the white eggs they lay. If that doesn't bother you then they are great snails and come in many different colors.

While this is a picture of an HRP, you can see the white eggs all over the place from the nerite snails 20180830_172630.jpg

ah hah.. funny story about nerites and me, apparently I had a bunch of them breed and hatch in my 55 so badly that I had to get a bunch of assassin snails after taking one of the big snails out and putting it in my betta tank for its safety still have it in with my betta and it is still having babies hatch but the betta has been eating them. now I have an overabundance of assassin snails but turns out my lfs is looking for them and can't keep them in stock.

Like Zanzag Zanzag mentioned nerite snails need brackish or full marine for the eggs to hatch. That is the nice thing about them since they can't overrun the tank. But also the drawback cause now you have the dead eggs all over the place.

Son of a gun just looked between the resident snail and the pictures of the species you told me it would be. Thank you for giving me the heads up on it, least I know it is helping to keep the betta tank clean till it gets bigger.
