It can be tricky to have a group when there's only a few territory areas, the planTs should help with that a lot, but if you're digging the big terra cotta pots it may be a good idea to add another

would cichlid caves work? I have a couple but I think the lady I got it off of said she had smaller cichlids ((one of the lakes dunno which one.)) so they might be a little too small. I was also thinking of adding a sort of tall lattice-like driftwood structure just having problems finding the right one.

Cichlid caves may be small as the firemouth mature. My guys not full grown and hes a solid 6" long and over 2" tall. Lattice like driftwood sounds like a good plan. River rocks are always good as well.

are there any kind of hides that one would recommend for FMs that won't look super cluttered? (brand price, recommendations for someone who has barely had practice in terms of weaving branches/logs into hides and lattices)

I like to get appropriate size terracotta plant pots but cover them them with rocks and wood so they look like caves. It looks more natural if you also put moss on them too. Sometime I use a larger pot that I have broken in half as it's easier to disguise but it's hard not to shatter them to pieces when you break them.

When I need caves my solution is to glue some smaller river rocks 3-5 " in groups of 3 to make small caves within rock piles. Silicone bonds rock pretty well. Just gotta let it cure and make sure there's plenty of surface contact.

just had a thought looking at a few rolls of mesh wall/floor kits i have of maybe doing DIY caves out of that and placing flat slate bits in the bottom of each and get some moss growing on them?

Hey all, picking up a used 75 Gallon with two 306 fluval canister filters here on Saturday and i wanted to ask after i am done cycling it i wanted to know how many firemouth cichlids should i put in, was thinking 3 females 1 male. plan on getting some drift wood and using the two clay pots that are coming with the pickup as well as finding another couple as well as line of site breaking plants such as java ferns and Tiger lilies in both red and green. any further suggestions? plan on feeding bug bites and some small live foods.
Sounds great. Well you can add some small non cichlids to complement them. I think that will look good.

appreciate the input, was looking at swordtails and a bushynose pleco. looking at picking up another hide or two but I'm not sure how much is too much space-wise.
