Fish flashing... How much salt should I be adding?

The recommended dosage of Safe removes 0.52 mg/L total chlorine. I have about 1.1 mg/L in tap water. If I do a fin level water change that leaves me with around 0.5 mg/L chlorine. Depending on your tap water and size of water change, you may have anything from no noticeable effect to irritation to rapid deaths.

In contrast, the recommended dose of Prime removes 3.22 mg/L.

For those that don't want to do the math, that makes Safe only three times more cost effective than Prime.

Where did you get the information that 1.25g of Safe only removes 0.52mg/l of total chlorine? Or are you talking about 200mg of Safe removes only 0.52mg/l of total chlorine?

that’s a cool device, a bit expensive though. I appreciate the information I’ll be looking into my tap water quality, and I’ll up the dose of safe during water changes.

I dosed another 200 gallons last night with salt all fish seem to not mind. I need to treat another 50 gallons today to get the salinity to the correct amount. I put about three pounds of koser salt into the tank... I’ll be cutting down on feeding during this time.

You water quality report should tell you the range for chlorine or chloramine.

The old instructions (before 2014) for Safe were 1 teaspoon per 200 gallons for up to 4ppm chloramine. I've been following the instructions despite the new label.

Update fish haven’t flashed since treatment started two weeks ago. Salinity is still at 1ppt. Fins have heeled up and the fish are looking better then ever. I’m going to be continuing the salt treatment for two more weeks just to be safe. I have also added more safe during water changes and have changed up my routine before refilling the tank.
