75g Looking to start African Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Females only causing fighting if there are not enough females for each species. An all-male tank is more challenging than a mixed gender tank IME. What about something like 4 species of Lake Malawi mbuna with 1m:4f of each? Almost every fish is colorful.
1m:4f yellow labs
1m:4f acei
1m:4f rusties
1m:4f Cynotilapia zebroides

Dun!

super helpful!

Do I need something for the bottom with this crew or will they take care of it?

I keep Y. Modesta / Red Tail Botia Loaches for the clean up crew in my African tank. Some use Clown Loaches. IMO, the Red Tails are a more durable loach. They are built like fullbacks and won't outgrow the tank.20191114_055121.jpg

My favorites (and not really for cleanup, but they will do the job) are Synodontis. A group of 5 multipunctatus or lucipinnis. And a bristlenose for the glass. Better to feed less and keep the food off the bottom entirely.

As far as the pH goes, most of these fish will live in lower pH water like 7, but would likely thrive and do better if you added something to buffer the water. I recommend crushed coral substrate, or limestone rock (or texas holey rock) in the tank, I find this to be more stable and reliable than dosing "ph up" powder products or natural grocery store alternatives. Some africans, Tanganyikans especially, really do need the high pH water to survive, but all of the petsmart/Petco variety africans will probably be pretty adaptable to water chemistry.

I have had crushed coral filter media and aragonite substrate and my pH never budged at all, 12 years and counting. I agree a higher pH would be better, so try the rocks and substrate, but I would still do the baking soda to get your KH stable and the pH will come up as well.

No matter how reputable, I would not order assorted. One could argue that a reputable vendor would not sell assorted.

Mbipia lutea and Haplochromis SP 44 are two different fish, but both are highly aggressive. I would skip them.

So 5-6 bags of this and lots of rock caves...

How heavy on the filtration?

any vendor suggestions to order fish from are appreciated.
