This is my setup of my first African tank. Mixed mbunas, synodontis cats, and a pleco. I found rocks outside my work from a project and cleaned them up and added argonite substrate. Added a piece of Malaysia driftwood. Sponge filter, 2 75 gallon hob filters. I was told they were all male at purchase time but a female was undercover. Ended up with fry. Mbunas are brutal . Only one survived and he is in there growing well. I found some odd hybrids that look really cool. Redempress/yellow lab mix, pearl orange blotch mix. I've learned by experience to keep them in greater numbers to avoid aggression. They are eating machines and I give veggie based flakes / pellets

- sorry comrade for your loss ?

mine are ok - living , possibly in fear.... the butterfly fish jumped ?? - these guys do recognize me and come up for food when they see me, i try to feed the smaller one more -

i’ve provided lots of cover for them - tank is pretty much a poly tank with an Afer in it.... oh and the “big eye cat” did grab a 6 banded sex... sumthin -

i’m going to move them to a 150 or 280 here soon....

It’s a good thing I never got my ornate bagrid catfish because it would have eaten other fish.

The Petsmart's in my area always have only small mixed unsexed African Cichlid. I suggest you find a lfs that has juvenile and matured colored up males on display. Maybe can do 4-5 male African Peacock. Please avoid any females this will cause problems.
I agree I actually think petsmart is the way to go. I find that Africans at my LFS cost twice as much as the petsmart fish, and at petsmart in the "mixed" African cichlid tank, you can often find quite rare fish, being sold at a great price. For example I found a katale island mbuna there, sold for usually like 20 bucks, but I got mine for 10! Same thing with a zebra obliquedens
