75g Looking to start African Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would skip the nasuta and the dimidiochromis in a 75G. If you do tropheus go with a species tank.

I have never kept the comps but I imagine they are similar to the Calvus that I currently keep. Great looking fish but they hide a lot. I have a small school of cyprichromis that have helped as dithers but as they have gotten older they have become more reclusive.
Troph are good fish also. I always found that they do best as a species only tank but I never had mine color up consistently like the pictures you are using. Kept duboisi in the past.

Sorry things didn't go well with some of the African projects.
If Mbunas are a possibility, maybe go for a male only Mbuna all star team community. Pick & choose males of your favorite varieties.
Although, I have a mixed African community, Haps, Peacocks & Mbuna, the majority of the Mbuna are
what I consider the best male representatives of that particular species I could find. It works out pretty well. Here's some pics of a select few.

I was actually a little surprised and disappointed by your issues with Victorians. They have always been a favorite of mine and one day I want to keep a zebra obliquidens tank. I have kept single males in the past and they colored up really nicely.

i tried them separated by species - i think my main issue was the ratio

the piebalds were 10m / 2 f
the lutea i believe are 10m/1-2f

i’ve got fry - going to separate one last time and get good ratios in each 75g -

i’ll post a pic but there is one random anomaly (very pretty blue and yellow) that came from the piebalds that i thought first was a hybrid -

going to separate again this weekend-

leaning towards the mbuna -

thanks all!

The Obliques will work very well, not sure about lots of multiple males. I have also kept Nyererei and Neochromis omnicaeruleus in species tanks, aggressive but beautiful.

I think Dr. Exum chose aggressive species and mixed them and not enough females.

took out 8 of the more dominant male piebalds - they are in a 40g with no girls

i’ll try and get a good count -

added 15 juvi (13f/2m)

and 4 of the adult males and 3 adult females

so i’m hoping it’s

16f / 6 m -

we’ll see ?‍♂️

there are 10 lutea in the right tank -

I would not do more than 3 males and I would double the rock.

added all the rock i had

took out three more males - think there are 3 left with maybe 2 juvi males - i need another overflow as i have 10 - 3” males in a 40g breeder -

lutea seem to be super shy and shoaling -
