Good idea, they definitely are predators. I had a saxatilis (about 6 inches long, most dwarves stay around 4 inches) and he ate ghost shrimp and guppies like there was no tomorrow

About that leaf fish, I personally had one that grew to 6 inches and he wasn’t inactive so to say. I really wouldn’t suggest one of them for a 29, maybe while they’re small but you would be best to upgrade it as time goes on to a 55 or a 75. If you keep it long enough then bigger perhaps given that I’ve seen one that was 8 inches long in person.
Different one maybe, I know the african and nandus ones gets 6-8 inches, but the leopard bush fish stays under 6 inches and in a 29 gallon that would not be bad, the tank is twice as wide and 4-5 times longer than the fish.

If so then I can confidently say that is the fish I had and that it does indeed get to 6 inches and potentially over.
Yeah that is it, and 6 inches is still small enough for a 29. I don't know how I forgot this fish as I love them, but golden wonder killifish, you can keep a school of them and they eat small fish, shrimp, and crickets.
I will say that I have seen a very large ctnopoma, probably a little over 6" before, that I wouldn't personally keep in a 29 gallon for life. You could of course buy one and upgrade when it is full-sized down the road if you feel it needs it.
And to be clear, the dwarf pikes I was talking about are C. regain or C. compressiceps, which get to about 3-4" max. Saxatillis or any of the 6" max pikes I would not keep in a 29 gallon.

Doesn't really meet your criteria but could try a pair of jewel cichlid. Try putting your hand in the tank if they are breeding!
A number of different puffer options would provide character fish that add interest when feeding.
Chaca chaca for a real ambush predator (which I would be less concerned about fitting a 29g just because of their sedentary nature)
A solitary Hemibagrus Olyroides would be ok in a 29g but I'm talking uk gal so 30" *18" *15"
