true max size for a teugelsi?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
late on the reply but i was trying to find one of these teugelsi because mine recently died. and i can attest that it is much bigger than 16" it was longer than my ornate which is around 26" its just very cylindical body and long not fat just long. when i saw 16" max on my search, i had to double check, but perhaps the reason is i bought it at 22" , so perhaps in the wild they get much bigger. it was diffinitely different from the rest of my bichir, like a moke or palma style body just really magnify to 3 times the size. it was the biggest length wise bichir in my tank, not the heaviest thought, mainly because congi just have too much girt.

Captive Bred 18-20” sizes is definitely achievable in the aquaria. It just takes about 4-5 years. Sometimes sooner. There’s plenty of CB Teugs reaching 14-16”+ the first 18-24 months. One of the fastest growing Bichir species to reach the foot mark.

As for the Wild Caughts. Toyin brought in some large 22-28”+ 2-3 years ago. I suspect most were shipped out overseas. As for documented max sizes. I’m confident many have reached over 30”+

Both of mine hit 18 within 18 months which is where they went to someone else as they both got really aggressive at about the same time.

May I ask you for your thoughts on one reaching 36 inches? I’m wishing to know what you think the chances are of let’s say one living in the wild hitting 36 inches are and if they could then how long would it take?

Here’s a 28” Wild Teug that was owned by member Dr.B Dr.B in mid 2016. Look at the length of this thang in a 7 feet long tank! It came from Toyin, Rehoboth Aquatics. I suspect survival rate most large bichirs imported from Africa are very low. Therefore, we don’t see many as they seem somewhat delicate. As for your question of age at larger sizes. It’s unknown. As for how frequent they are being above 30” plus. That’s also unknown. If large specimens are accidentally caught as a bycatch. It’s likely for human consumption by the locals.
