Unpopular opinion- NLS not impressed...

Correct, and what you are seeing is known as associative conditioning. The fish see their owner approaching the tank, picking up various containers, in various shapes & colors, lifting the lid, and they have come to expect that the next thing that will take place is that food will be dropped in the tank. The food typically appeals to their olfactory senses, as well as their taste buds, and they eat.

Some people might see the above scene as illustrating a group of happy fish. I see it as a group of fish that are doing what comes natural to them. The fact that some fish prefer some foods over others, doesn't tell us anything beyond what we have always known, animals have preferences, sometimes for a multitude of reasons.

But the question then becomes should we ignore the nutritional value of foods based on human emotions, or feed what we know is best for the animal?

Offer a group of young children two platters of food; one platter filled with cake & candy, and another with baked salmon & steamed broccoli, and it should become crystal clear why it's up to us to choose what's best for our fish to eat. I'm certain that everyone will agree that cichlids do not have the same intelligence level as human children.

I agree that cichlids are very unlikely to have the same intelligence as human children, though regarding some adults I know, hmmm, i'm on the fence with that one:ROFL:

Oy vey here we go again

Adding variety is not humanizing the animal. Most animals by nature are opportunistic feeders not discriminating what is available when the wild has not much to offer and alot to offer they pick and choose. Being a specialized feeder reduces the competition in the wild. Thats where the variety has to come in. Hello what about seasons? Each season cycle is not the same either when it comes to the animals diet. We feed them the same stuff season after season dont we when they have different things even during rainy seasons dry periods?!?! How is that humanzing a lifeform? We as fishkeepers are increasingly more acute and aware trying to replicate their true environments. Going to some lengths to replicate the biotope even with those 3D backgrounds. How is that humanizing the fish?

If it was truly REPLICATING the diet in the wild. Giving it all possible vitamins and minerals it need if a fish species only fed on alage its so easy to say NLS alagemax is perfect. Its not. In the wild those tiny tiny lifeforms we overlook goes into their mouths as well as alage and all of that jazz. Different species of alage it feeds off on.

What is concerning is there is already someone on this thread that clearly made the association that feeding NLS exclusively caused stunting and runting of their cichlids in their fishroom. Im still feeding my dang loaches the NLS along with other stuff. No one can convience me that NLS exclusively will be the perfect replacement. Its not.

Just FYI

Whoever mentioned Koalas... its a good example of a specalized feeder. Yet they still eat onlg few different species of gum trees out of hundreds different kinds of gum trees. Its still VARIETY and they got preferences too. Refusing to eat hundreds of gum trees but only few? Reading it up even further One area koala will prefer A B C D E F and the different area koala will only eat X Y Z from the gum tree species. Still variety here they cannot make it into leaf chow... Its still not humanizing the koalas.

I wouldnt go near one even if theyre supposedly cute cuddly teddybear looking animals. Now that was humanizing the animal. See where I am going on this. Stop saying we are humanizing it when we are attempting to offer it the same conditions for better animal husbandry.

We all aim to provide quality care and to accuse other fish hobbyists of attempting to replicate the condition by adding variety will be a step closer to it.... by belittling them that theyre simply humanizing it is just beyond infuriating for me.

Just my two cents. ?

NLS has highly varied ingredients. Even algaemax not only has 9 types of alages but also has some krill, giant squid, fish oil and many more things.

RD. fed all his fish NLS exclusively, American and African cichlids and all were stunning (I have looked at pictures of few).

About humanizing the fish and varied diet, fish needs varied diet or different pellets because it will get bored of same food is humanizing. Feeding varied diet for nutritional requirements is not humanizing.

I feed my fish a mix of flake, pellets, dried black worms and frozen bloodworms with the occasional live tubifex worms or mosquito larvae too. The pellet and flake being the staple. I do it because I assume it gives the fish a more varied mix of nutrients even though I know the quality pellet and flake will keep them alive healthy.
Honestly the main reason I feed such a mix is because it's fun for me, I like watching the different reactions to the different foods, and feel like I'm giving the fish a treat.I guess if I'm not over feeding it's not doing any harm.

Same here, I feed pellets and bloodworms on weekends. I like the way he eats bloodworms.
