The Lake Turkana jewel cichlid, from the Kenyan Rift Valley. These are just starting to trickle into North America. I was lucky enough to grab a small group that was bred in Germany. It looks like a female is finally accepting a male. Hopefully they continue to color up; they're not quite as bright red as the ones I've seen online. They've only been here for about 10 days and are still in QT so maybe they just need to settle in more.

Very neat looking jewels ya got there. Love the bright electric blue spot in their fins. Let us know if they ever spawn and have fry, I'd love to try breeding some of my own lol.

Whoa very unique. I had no idea about this species.

They are apparently pretty rare in the hobby. I first saw them about a year from a German hobbyist on Facebook and loved their solid orange body color.

Wow, that’s a nice coloured fish!

They should color up more hopefully. Here is a video of Oliver Lucanus’ pair which are nice and bright.

I have heard about them and knew they existed but I never did look them up. I’m impressed....way better looking than the “new” turquoise jewels you see now a days!

Yeah, I have seen those in the stores. Not impressed. IMO a lot of the domestic jewels these days look inbred or something. I see them at the LFS all the time and they don't have the best shape or fins, and they're usually clamped and beat up. I'm not impressed. The really bright red ones would be nice if they were in better condition. I've seen jewels since I was a kid but I've never had any interest in them until I saw the H. exsul.

I had a pair of jewels once...it was when I first started keeping fish...I know they were just the common red jewels and they didn’t really spark my interest then...but like you these ones are a gem ?

nice pickup, looking forward to following their progress
