I am on an extended break from University now. Class material will continue online from April. Crazy hey..
Coronavirus has made it to africa? Hmm, makes me wonder how a certain girl from south africa I know is doing...

A few years ago I shopped at a WD while I stayed in the Bahamas of all places.

Except for that dog movie, 3/4 of the country never heard tell of Win Dixie.
Never heard of it till my local sweetbay was taken over years ago.

Hello; Not sure if this is welcome information but is perhaps sobering. I try to use statements from people with some credibility and think I picked this up from Dr. Fauci. There are by definition very general numbers and also perhaps somewhat rough estimates. If I heard correctly had the government done little or nothing to slow the spread of the new virus might have yielded maybe 2,200,000 deaths. If the federal and state guidelines now in place of closing venues, social distance, self isolation and all do work then the hope is there may be 1,100,000 deaths. Roughly reducing the total deaths by half. Again not welcome information and only for the USA, not the world.
My take being reducing the total number of deaths by half is a decent goal and I do hope the measures actually work that well. My experience over many years makes me less optimistic but I am a natural pessimist.

I have been suspecting there is more than just an abundance of caution behind some of the new guidelines being suggested. I get that the total number deaths around the world are not great when compared to deaths from more common problems such as other flu, heart disease, cancers and such. I have heard some folks, for example, use flu death numbers as a way to down play the corvid19 impact and to claim all this is an overaction. I just do not know how to gauge things at this point. I guess we who survive will do our Monday morning quarterback type evaluations. If things do not turn out too bad there will be claims of how dumb it was to take such dramatic actions. If things turn out worse we will be looking for blame.

A few things seem correct so far. This new virus is some multiples easier to catch and spread than the flu. That this new virus is some multiples more deadly than the flu. That this virus may be mainly spread by coughs and sneezes but also can stay infective on surfaces for at least hours and likely even days.
That there are no clear medications to use that specifically work for the corvid19. There are a number of trials going on and a number of rumors going around about meds but nothing certain yet. If you get it and have serious lung or heart complications they may be able to give some support with respirators, oxygen with the hope your body can maybe fight it off. If you get it and have mild symptoms then you just tough it out.

I get that the old in general are at more risk and those with some other immune or health problems are at higher risk. I have heard it called the "boomer doomer". That said my take is no one is essentially safe. Younger and healthier folks seem likely to have the better chance of having a mild case and recovering. I keep thinking of the potential for these virus types to change and mutate and wonder if all the cards have been laid out yet.

I hear talk about a potential lack of hospital spaces. Seems to me if floor space is needed we have a lot of empty schools, stadiums, churches and such sitting empty all around. These will not do anything about trained health care workers but at least there should be places to put folks.
Back during WWII my father was shot On Iwo Jima and eventually evacuated. He was shot thru the arm and was among the walking wounded. On the beach he was waiting to be evacuated to a hospital ship when he learned of more men of his company being wounded. He rode the ambulance jeeps back to where he company was fighting because he knew where they were so they could be found. On the hospital ship as it sailed to a mainland hospital he went around giving water and such to other wounded who could not walk. There will be a number of people who recover from this virus and likely who will be immune. Perhaps they can help with the less seriously ill in some way in the temporary medical places if it comes to that.

Why am I one of the youngest members here and know of it while some of our older members don't know of it?

How is it even possible that someone doesnt know about it at this point?
