Anyone know what kind of snail this is?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As long as it’s not an assassin snail it’s fine; it is the only snail I do not want! I like snail that breed easily so I don’t have to buy them all the time. When I was a kid I got three golden mystery snails and ended up with over 100 and didn’t really have to buy any snails for my other tanks and had plenty of food for the clown loach trio I had! I love snails and loaches, and loaches love snails; so we make it work  It has some little friends in there too but they are baby Malaysian trumpet snails for some adults which I ordered on purpose even though some people think me crazy

Lol never had luck with mystery snails, I'd be able to keep them alive for about 1-2 months and then randomly find the shell empty, which wouldn't be so bad if I had shell dwellers but currently I don't. Had the same problem with apple snails. Never tried trumpet snails tho and kind of always wanted to but never see them for sale near me. I can find plenty of rabbit snails tho.

Most LFS’s don’t carry Malaysian trumpet snails because a lot of aquarists consider them pests, they breed like wildfire; they are often something that has to be ordered online, but they are near unkillable.

I hear they make good substrate movers. And honestly I would prefer a better looking snail over these tiny bland pond snails I got. Tried getting rid of em sooo many times but they always bounce back. Lately I've just been leaving a net in over night with a few algea wafers as bait and just taking it out in the morning. Usually kills about 5-6 dozen snails every time but I still have several thousand in the tank.

Looks like ramshorns too me, they occur in all sorts of colours and patterns.

Loaches and Puffers usually do the trick, but Botia Loaches are less aggressive; the size of your would be the only question as far as what species would be best.

It's a 55g, thought of getting a few pea puffers to help out. I figure if I can't get rid of em I could atleast get something to help control the numbers. Currently the only problem I see for them being in the tank would be the juvi angelfish I'm growing out to breed. They aren't full time residents but untill I get a pair they will be in there. They got a 35g all to themselves once they pair up.

Botia loaches wouldn't be a bad idea either tho, they got a nice pattern and disposition atleast.

Ramshorns are very easy to control: manage your feeding. The more leftover food there is, the more they breed. You can also manually remove them from the glass, they have never got out of control in my experience.

Found a second one a couple days ago and I believe I caught them breeding today; guess I won’t have to order any ramshorn snails after all!:woot: At least until it comes time to add new blood to the genepool.

They don't "breed" they are hermaphrodites. Meaning you only need 1 to make more. Alot of people select the color morphs out of a population and try to sell them at increased pricing for a "special ramshorn". I've been raising them for about 2 years for food for my schoutdeni puffer. I pulled a red a blue and one that had zebra type stripes. The red throws reds, the blue is a mixture of blue and regular color the zebra stripe is a mixed bag. Not sure how the color morphing works with a species that's technically cloning itself......1 gene pool.
