Went to buy feed.... a sequel to buying shrubs.

Lol well better to have a chicken like being handled then not. Makes it much easier to move em around atleast.
Lol ik your chickens are going to be far bigger then the ones I have plans on getting. All the chicks I'm planning on getting are bantam breeds.

Yes, I hope these guys will be a lot tamer then the guineas are. Yesterday it took me half an hour to coop them for the night?
Thankfully my daughter helped me tonight and it took far less time to get them rounded up.

Bantams are very cute?
I don’t want to go with too small of birds due to predators. I’m afraid my cats and other strays may take them out. :/

I'm mainly going with bantam breeds that make good pets so I can possibly sell some chicks later on along with getting some "free" eggs. They won't be free range (since I live in town) but they will have a large chicken run fenced off for em with a cover over it to keep em in along with protecting them from raptors. I figure a run roughly 30ft long and 8-10ft wide should be plenty of space for a bunch of tiny birds. Also planning on getting some guineas for extra security for the lil guys. The main problem I'm going to be facing is sealing the coup up tight enough to where no raccoons or skunks can get in when I lock it up every night.

Sounds like you’ll have a nice setup.
I think keeping coons and skunks out shouldn’t be too hard. Lay brick or cement for the foundation and use metal to cover the sides a couple feet up. I think that would keep them safe from even really determined predators:)

I’m so crazy excited about these little guys. I need to make myself a new apron. The kind that has special little pockets for placing eggs in them??
I **think** I have 3 boys and 7 girls based off their wing shape. But I don’t know how accurate that is. Supposedly that means that dark chick in the last picture is a pullet, but it’s crest is more pronounced then the other two I have of the same variety ??‍♀️

Lol the only way ik to accurately determine a chicks sex is to basically vent it kinda like a fish but a bit more invasive. Basically ya got to spread the cloaca open to see if the chick has a bump inside or not. If it's got a bump it's a male, no bump and it's a female. Granted I still would say it's easier to just let em grow up and wait for em to show their gender themselves.

The apron wouldn't be a bad idea tho, it would be nice to have a safe and easy way to carry eggs around without breaking em.

I watched a video on venting them last night.... I’ll just wait to know for sure. Lol

Lol yeah it's a bit too invasive for my liking too. Hopefully none of your roosters end up like how ours (Danny) was. Once he hit maturity he became really mean, would try to spur most anybody he wanted to. Lol had to break a tennis racket over that bird before he got the hint not to mess with me. Ended up having to butcher that bird, still have him in the deep freeze waiting for some BBQ sauce.

Yeah, I hope any Roos will be mild mannered. My husband has already warned me that if he gets attacked by any of the boys then they are gone. I can’t blame him. He dad has told us some pretty bad stories about his old rooster attacking him every chance it got. He ended up giving it to a friend. His dad won’t butcher birds.

Yeah atleast from my experiences roosters are extremely mean. Danny would pretend to walk away from ya but if you turned your back to him immediately he would attack. Didn't help that he had 1.5in long spurs either.

I took my little chick Twilight out for some fresh air yesterday. You can see the guineas in the background, they got pretty curious when they saw it. 21BF70E6-CB6E-48C0-86D7-BCD66FE2861A.jpeg6575FD7D-08AF-42EA-A52B-A76E2FEC0A73.jpeg
These guys are all getting pretty big and there is no sign that our renter will be emptying the bin I plan to make into the chicken coop. I might have to make something to put them in temporarily.

Wow very fast growth indeed. The Guinea remind me of a scene in the movie Chicken Run lol.
