Name change thread OT cleanup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah mine was also entirely a joke. I do not nor will ever want to be a mod here. Enough on my plate as it is.
I actually am open to the idea of being a mod here, getting to help the community just sounds wonderful even if the workload is ridiculous. Giving back to the site that does so much for me if you will.

The reason I don't want to is that I have completely lost interest in the hobby. Not because of too much work, but simply put, I no longer enjoy it. Nor have I made any contributions whatsoever to the hobby or knowledge of it. My only marginal contribution to science whatsoever is discovering a slightly differentiated subspecies of gastrotrich.

You're doing a lot better. I've noticed your effort.

I think you need a little more life experience under your belt before you're ready for leadership however. Still though, you've taken everything I've told you to heart, you've worked consciously to be a better part of the community, and you've matured quite a bit. I know I'm just a random avatar on the internet, so my opinion doesn't matter, but I can see that you've grown as a person and I'm proud of you.

That's entirely fair. This job is a thankless PITA to be honest. I just hope I can help make this a place everyone can enjoy. I just hope the place I've taken the community proves to be a good one. ?‍♂️

That’s fair, you can’t give 100% if your heart is not in it and no one will blame you. You gonna get out of the hobby completely?

Thank you Chicxulub, it means a lot coming from especially since you saw me at my worse have seen me since I was banned. That ban was what I needed to finally take things seriously.

Oh I know I’m not ready to be a mod or even be a partial mod, I think I’ll be ready at a minimum of when I’m 20-22, by then I think I’ll be mature enough and have seen enough things and learned to deal with enough to possibly be ready to be a mod.

Chicx, I hold your word in high regard, you have done things I can only dream of at the moment, you are one of the legends on the site in my opinion and y’all are legends because of what y’all have done in the hobby. I respect you and you wouldn’t tell me something that would have negative consequences if I did it, you want the best for the site and its members.

Also did you ever get my apology letter when I got banned? I sent one to Li and it was a multi part letter with each part apologizing to someone else and one part was addressed to you. I’ve actually been meaning to bring it up to the various people that I addressed but never found a good time with any of them.

I'm going to keep what I have (nano tanks, SW, bichirs) and not acquire anything else. Some fish I wish I could sell or rehome but others I'll never be able to part with.

That said, biology macro and micro, which has been my main focus (and the thing I've been known for my knowledge in) is starting to become less and less interesting, increasingly overshadowed by physics and mathematics as I get older.

It's very difficult to part with because I've put so much work into microbiological studies these past few years. My area of expertise is protists (stentors in particular, I've successfully cultured every species, including the ones notoriously difficult to grow), and I've met university faculty who know less than me regarding that. I'll see where I go, I may come back to the hobby at some point.

Thank you! I think you probably think significantly more highly of me than I deserve, but it is greatly appreciated regardless.

We did get your letter by the way. It was the deciding factor in allowing you to return. A display of humility like that speaks to one's character.

There's nothing wrong with any of that, and I think that you're displaying what is likely a typical progression through the hobby. Discovery, first steps, OMG BUY EVERYTHING, man this is a lot of work (you are here), focus on a few passion projects, finally settled into a niche.

Nothing wrong with that at all, or in focusing your energy on other endeavors. I still have fish for example, but I've really no desire to buy anything until I can find my unicorn juruense catfish (which I may have done recently).

You're clearly quite bright, and I look forward to hopefully seeing what ingenuity you can bring to the hobby

I had a feeling it was at least partially why I was given a last chance, hopefully I haven’t made anyone regret giving me this chance and have at least partially redeemed myself

I’m between these two lol, I’m having to play catch up and get more tanks to try to lessen the amount of over stock in my tanks. I’m legitimately thinking about going with two 125 gallons to split my two 75 gallons into.

If I recall correctly I mentioned to you in a pm about wanting to do a write up of wallace's shoehead catfish when I was able to. Shall I expect to receive the news of my promotion to mod a week after I post it or did my perma ban nuke any chances of becoming a mod? :naughty:
Wait you were perma banned??
Sorry I was inactive all summer and fall so I have no idea what happened. That's when all the probation member stuff came to be right?

Thanks for the kind words.
One thing I've wanted to do and been putting off for a long time is studying how anaerobic bacteria can affect the aquarium microbiome. To do this I'd first have to identify common strains, study their predators, chemical byproducts, etc. To fully complete this study will take several months but when it's done I will post my findings on here. Does anybody know anything about this? Effects? Genera?
duanes duanes do you know anything about this since you're a microbiologist and all?
To my knowledge there have never really been any thorough studies on aquarium anaerobes, I hope to shed some light on this topic.
